PROLOGUE
the misfortune of miss crain

Charlotte Crain saw something in that house.

Nobody had believed her as a little girl naively walking through its foreboding walls and it's fog of mystery, yet she knew it was all real. Hill House was the thing that kept her up at night.

It had started to digest the girl like all members of the Crain family - slowly and with agonising heartache. Beneath her complex exterior she felt the reminder of the past, the scar of a monster infectious with misfortune that would plague the following years.

She had become a beautiful disaster of a woman living her nightmare of a life alone.

And without knowing how to escape such misery, Miss Crain chose to live amongst the darkness and make a home in the ruins of her mind because deep inside of her heart, that untouched foreign place, she harboured the idea that she would never be the same again.
