"Hey y/n, are you going down to the drag race tonight?" Evie asks you. You and Evie had been great pals since grade school, she'd introduced you to your one and only, Sodapop.
"Probably, is Soda racing?"
"I think so, Steve and I are going, we'll give you a ride," she says.
"Good idea, I'll surprise him when he wins,"
"If he wins,"
"You know Soda, he's gonna win,"
You and Evie spent the rest of the day hanging about your place. You lived with your grandma, and she loved all of your friends.
"Here he is," Evie announces hearing the distinct sound of Steve's car. You wrapped a cardigan around your shoulders, which were bare, as you were wearing a vest top with high-waisted shorts. Steve knocks the door and your grandma answers. You hear her speaking to Steve and suppress a laugh.
"Hello, Steve dear,"
"Hello, ma'am," he replies.
"I'll just go fetch the girls, they're mighty excited. It's so lovely of you to take y/n,"
"It's no problem," Steve laughs as you and Evie appear from the staircase.
"I'll see you later, y/n!" says your grandma.
"Bye grandma," you smile.
"Thank you," Evie says to your grandma as you leave the house.
Evie has shotgun and you sit in the back. Evie turns up the radio and sings along loudly to Elvis Presley.
Steve parks up and you and Evie sit down beside the dusty road while Steve goes and greets Soda. You try to stay hidden from view as you are still planning to surprise Soda.
You come to your senses and decide to stand by the finish, Steve joins you just as the busty back-up girl indicates for the race to start. You crane your neck to watch Soda whizz down the straight track, dust flying into the atmosphere behind him. You and Evie look a bit crazy, screaming and flapping your arms around wildly. As you predicted Sodapop jets across the finish line seconds before his competitor.
You skid to a halt by the finish line, just as Soda is climbing out of his zouped-up car.
"Y/N!" he says, happily running to you. He wraps you in his strong arms and the moment feels like it lasted forever.
