They sat in front of Rag's tree thinking of how to find a bush baby.
Surprisingly, Nika had delivered the lily as promised - saying something about how she feigned being Ala's personal fairy and gotten past the turtles - and Ebere had to tender an apology to her.
Ebere couldn't see what was so forbidden about the flower. It looked like an innocent lily.
Now as she fumbled with the flower, the second moon slowly rising on the pale green sky, she was confronted with the possibility that she wasn't going to go home.
Why me? Of all people?
She wanted to cry. She was never going to see her mom or her dad or her brother, Agustin or her aunt Maggie again. Even Nicky!
As much as she disliked the young boy, she found she missed him now, so much.
I'm never going to go back to California and have a McDonald's big burger washed down by a cup of honey tea from Starbucks.
The thought of food made her stomach growl and depressed her even more.
She felt Diane's small hand on her arm and she looked down at the small fairy.
"Don't give up, Ebere. We're almost there," she squeaked.
"What's the point? The moon's almost risen and we still haven't got a bush baby's mat. I'm going to be stuck here forever," she couldn't stop the tears and they came down in torrents, racking her body with sobs.
"It's not that bad. If you're lucky you'll become a fairy. It's great being a fairy."
"Don't you get it? I don't want to be a fairy! I want to be me! Eberechi Costain! A human, not a fairy!" she yelled at her.
The outburst effectively shut Diane up.
She continued sobbing until she heard the flutter of Rag's wings. She cleaned her tears and looked up.
"I went into town. I've got good news and bad news. Two bad news actually. The good news is Ala was grateful for the peacock feather but the bad news are: A. I didn't see a bush baby. They're usually always running around stealing people's food but I didn't see any," he paused, afraid how the other bad news would affect her.
"B is?"
"They're rolling out the drums for the coming of the second moon. I'm sorry Ebere, it's too late."
Bosco came and sat beside her. In her sadness at not going home she'd completely forgotten him.
She lay down on the floor awaiting whatever monster she would turn into.
