Chapter Five
“Wake up sunshine! It’s a cloudy day and we need the sunshine!” Amber sang dancing around Amelia’s bed. Groaning Amelia sat up and watched her friend dance around her bed.“Where did I find you? Maybe I should put up some found posters so the Insane Hospital can find you too.” Amelia causing Andrew to chuckle from across the room.
“I have to stand with Amelia on this one, no more wake up songs.” Sam groaned sitting up in his sleeping bag on the floor.
“You should really get an air mattress Samuel that is terrible for you back.” A voice said from the door. Amelia’s jaw dropped as she took in her Mother holding a box from Dunkin Donuts.
“M-mom?” Amelia asked still staring in shock. She hadn’t seen her Mother since she first woke up from surgery.
“Of course dear who else? Now who wants some donuts? I also brought some milk and orange juice.” Tessa said putting down the box so she could grab the drinks from her purse and also some cups. Sam stared at his Mother from his place on the floor, could she have finally seen the light?
“What are you wearing?” Amelia asked taking in her Mother’s attire, a pair of loose fitting shorts, and a tank top. Her Mother’s blonde hair was gathered up in a messy bun, and her face was clear of make up.
“Clothes.” Tessa responded in a duh tone sticking out her tongue at her baffled daughter.
“What am I not allowed to wear something casual to see my daughter?” Tessa asked her face drooping in sadness. She was trying to be the Mother that Amelia didn’t have when she was away at work. Was this a bad idea?
“It’s just usually your so put together, I just..” Amelia couldn’t finish her sentence as she caught Andrew’s questioning gaze. Shrugging her gaze turned back to her Mother who was handing Amber a powdered donut on a napkin. What happened to sugar makes you fat?
“Maybe we should have a talk sweetie. Will you go on a short walk with me down the hall?” Tessa asked hopeful.
“Sure.” Amelia said swinging her legs to the side of her bed. Andrew got up from where he was sitting to help Amelia to her feet. Smiling up at him, Amelia stood on her feet, slightly wobbly.
“Thanks.” She whispered as he let her go, staying close just in case. Reaching over Amelia grabbed her IV pole and shuffled carefully to her Mother’s side.
“Sorry I’m a little slow I haven’t really gotten out of bed all that much.” Amelia muttered embarrassed at her slow pace. Amelia had always been one to enjoy fast things, like roller coasters and race cars.
“It’s okay sweetie.” Tessa smiled grabbing her daughter’s elbow as they made their way down the hall.
“I’m sorry.” Tessa said looking at her daughter with watery eyes. “I’m sorry that I wasn’t the Mother that you needed when you were younger. I thought that giving you the best life meant providing you with money, but I was wrong.” Guiding them to a pair of chairs Tessa let a few tears stream down her face.
“It’s okay Mom everyone makes mistakes. You’re here now though and that’s all that matters.” Amelia said tears of her own dripping off her chin. Rubbing a finger over her cheeks Tessa smiled at her gorgeous daughter.
“You’re so beautiful.” She whispered planting a kiss on her forehead.
“I love you Mom.” Amelia whispered smiling at her Mom.
