Shikatema: Because You're Worth it

He looked down at her battered body. Bandages covered almost all her visible skin, which was a lot because she didn't have a shirt on. Her head, however, remained untouched. Shikamaru couldn't help staring into her teal eyes, but then his gaze was drawn to two faint red lines running from the corners of her mouth. It was the only disturbance to her beauty.

All my fault.

He had been on a mission, his enemy had been too good, and Temari had saved his "lazy ass".

He would have died, but now she might. The least he could do was sit here.

What a drag.

He remembered what she had said so long ago. "Sacrifice is an inevitable part of missions. Didn't you receive emotion training?"

But there was no way to ignore the feelings pitted inside him. Swirling together were guilt, sorrow, and something else he couldn't quite put his finger on.

And you call yourself a genius.

Either way, tears started streaming down his face. He knew he wouldn't be able to face it if she left him too.

"Oi lazy." Temari weakly smirked, voice hoarse. He jerked his head up in surprise, then quickly wiped the tears away. A sad smile replaced her attempt at a grin. "Don't cry for me crybaby."

Then she started crying and he knew he couldn't stop, he couldn't hold back. Shikamaru leaned down and pressed his lips to Temari's. He tasted her tears and felt her kiss back. After what felt like an eternity, he broke away.

She attempted to sit up, only to shriek in pain and fall back. Shikamaru winced, as if her pain hurt him, which it did. She tried again, only to be gently pushed back down. The tears streamed more plentifully.

"Why did you save me?" He whispered. "You could have died!" His voice cracked on the last words.

Temari wrapped her arms around his neck, wincing. Then she grimaced and pulled herself up so her mouth was to his ear.

"Because you're worth it."
