Skylynn's POV
We landed in Zabon and I looked around at all the different things on sale.
"As Navigators, our job us to identify worthy Hunter applicants anf guide them to the exam site. In other words, it would be extremely difficult for someone to reach the site without a Navigatir's help." The blue haired guy said as the sellers kept yelling about their goods. I had no money on me so I just kept walking as to not tempt myself.
"You know, Zabon City is quite a shady place." Leorio said as he looked around.
"Prosperous cities tend to attract all sorts of nasty types." Kurapika said calmly as I put my hands in my pockets boredly.
"What are you doing Gon! We're going!" Leorio called when he noticed Gon wasn't with us.
"Yeah!" Gon replied and ran to catch up with us.
"I believe that is the building." The Navigator said and pointed straight ahead. We all stared at the tall building that was extremely tall.
"So tall! They have a really nice building." Gon said happily.
"So this is the exam site..." Leorio said as we all walked up to it and looked up at it from up close. "This is what it draws..." Leorio started.
"Hunter applicants from across the world congregate here." Kurapika finished.
"My first shot at the Hunter Exam... I wonder if this is how dad felt." Gon said in a determined tone.
"Hey guys!" The Navigator called to us. "Over here." He said causing us to look over. "This is it." He said, pointing to a small restaurant.
"Come on. You're messing with us, right? It just looks like a regular restaurant. You're telling me that Hunter applicants from all over the globe come to this old dive to take the exam?" Leorio said in shock.
"That's exactly right. The hunter exam attracts millions of applicants every year, and no onw would expect the exam to be held here, right?" The Navigator asked.
"Good point." Leorio said reluctantly.
"Welcome! Take a seat." The chef said without looking up.
"Is the back room available?" The Navigator asked as the chef looked up.
"What are you having?" He asked us.
"The steak combo, please, the one that'll make us see the light. Make it four." The Navigator said and held up 4 fingers.
"Combo for four, eh? How do you want 'em cooked?" The chef asked ominously.
"Grilled slowly over a low flame 'til done, please." The Navigator said mater-a-factly.
"Got it. See yourselves to the back room." The chef said as the Navigator lead us there. "That must have been a code. He didn't pay." I thought as we walked. We soon made it to a room with 4 chairs in it.
"Okay, wait here." The Navigator said to us after we entered.
"For what? Where are all the other applicants?" Leorio asked.
"I can't wait for the steak combo!" Gon said happily and I sweat dropped.
"Gon, that was just the password to get us inside. There's no steak combo." Kurapika explained.
"Okay. So we don't get to eat?" Gon asked disappointed.
"Nope. It is a good idea though to have the password be an order. It's not suspicious." I said casually.
"Only one in ten thousand." The Navigator said, bring our attention back to him. "You're very lucky. That's how many ever make it this far. Nice job. You did great for first-timers. Well, good luck to you." The Navigator told us and I couldn't help but smile slightly.
"Thanks for your help!" Gon said and held his arm out to the Navigator to shake. He seemed shocked at first but then smiled and shook Gon's hand and I couldn't help but smile slightly.
"I hope that next year I can help you again." The Navigator said with a smile
"Who said we aren't going to pass! You think we'll fail 'cuz it's our first time!" I said angerly as he left. Right when the door closed, the room started to shake and sound like it was moving.
"It seems this room is actually an elevator." Kurapika said as we all looked at the sign that indicated what floor we are on.
"That explains it. That bastard thinks he'll see us again next year because he expects us to fail." Leorio said angerly as he sat down with his arms crossed.
"I literally just said that...." I grumbled as I sat down, glaring at Leorio.
"Once every three years." Kurapika started as he and Gon sat down as well. I sat across from Gon which meant we are both between Leorio and Kurapika.
"What's that?" Leorio asked in an irritated tone.
"It's how often a rookie passes the exam." Kurapika said calmly.
"Huh?" Leorio said in shock.
"It's that unusual?" Gon asked curiously.
"It is. Some can't handle it. It's too mentally and physically taxing. It's also not too uncommon for veterans to break the rookies so badly that they never retake the test." Kurapika explained.
"So that's why people who want to be hunters are willing to risk everything for it." Gon said curiously as Leorio suddenly stood up.
"You've hit the nail right on the head, my little friend! Being a hunter means making more money than anyone in the world!" Leorio yelled out causing me to get annoyed.
"Wrong! People become hunters to join the world's most noble profession!" Kurapika exclaimed as he stood up as well.
"You two are idiots for arguing about this..." I mutter as they start arguing above me.
"Shut up, goody-goody!" Leorio spat.
"Selfish money grubber!" Kurapika shot back. Gon just looked between the two with a confused expression as I restrained myself from hitting them both with my staff as they almost quite literally growled at each other.
"Hey, Gon, listen up! There's a list of the 100 richest people every year, and every single year, there are over 50 hunters who make the list, that's more than half!" Leorio basically yelled at Gon, who he had moved to be the side in slight horror.
"There are some hunters, sad to say, who seek treasure and wild game, but they're second-rate. True hunters work tirelessly to maintain order in society as well as in nature." Kurapika said, obviously irritated as well.
"Oh, screw that! Once you're a hunter, it's free to enter most countries. And facilities no charge! How's that for benefits, huh?" Leorio yelled at Gon again, getting into his face for the second time.
"Hunters have many difficult and important responsibilities, preserving artifacts and species, catching crooks, and even apprehending rogue hunters. " Kurapika pointed out plainly.
"The fame and fortune! That's why people want to become Hunters!" Leorio yelled at Gon.
"No, it's conviction, profound knowledge, and a sound mind and body, traits that are a true hunter's pride!" Kurapika yelled before Kurapika and Leorio started to growl at each other again.
" Hey, Gon, which of us do you agree with?! What kind of hunter will you be!?" They both yelled at Gon, causing me to stand up and slam my hands on the table before Gon could reply, causing all three of them to look at me.
"How about both of you shut up! Everyone has their reasons to become Hunters and you shouldn't attack Gon like that! And arguing over me wasn't the smartest thing to do either!" I yelled at them with a dark glare. A bell then dinged as we reached floor B100.
"I think we've arrived." Kurapika said and I untensed
"We'll finish this later." Leorio said as Gon let out a sigh of relief. Soon after, the doors opened to reveal a tunnel full of people. They all seemed to watch us as we stepped out. "Is it me, or is the mood here pretty grim?" He asked in a quiet tone.
"We saw plenty of other applicants in the city, but these guys are different... Each one of them is a master in their own right." Kurapika said softly as well.
"They all worked hard to get here. It doesn't surprise me about how intense they seem." I said casually as Gon stepped forward.
"Excuse me..." Gon said as everyone just stared at him darkly before looking away. "Looks like everybody's really on edge down here." He said as he looked at everyone in the room. A small green person in a tux that almost looked like a jelly bean with arms and legs then walked up to us.
"Hello. Please take your number badge. Thank you." The little green man said as he handed me a badge that says '402'. He then handed one to Leorio that said '403'. "Here you go." He said as he handed Kurapika one that said '404'. "Here." He said as he handed Gon one that said '405'. "Be sure to wear this on your chest at all times, please, and be careful not to lose it, okay?" He said before walking off. I put it on and looked up when someone started to talk to us.
"Don't think I've seen you guys before. Yo!" Some random guy sitting on a ledge said as we walked closer to him.
"You can tell it's our first time here?" Gon asked curiously
"More or less." He said as he jumped down, causing me to instinctively step back. "It's getting easier. It's my thirty-fifth attempt so it comes with the territory." He said with a smile.
"You've tried thirty-five times?!" All four of us said in unison and in total shocked.
"I guess you could say I'm a Hunter exam veteran." The weird guy said.
"And you take pride in that?" I asked with a confused expression.
"Not really something to brag about..." Leorio said at the same time as me.
"Indeed..." Kurapika agreed with an almost disappointed look.
"Anyway, if you have any more questions, I'd be happy to help." The weird guy added with a closed eye smile that seemed to try a bit too hard to seem genuine.
"Thanks a lot!" Gon said happily.
"Oh, by the way, the name's Tonpa." Tonpa said as he extended his hand towards Gon.
"Hi, I'm Gon." Gon replied and shook Tonpa's hand. "These are Coco, Kurapika and Leorio." Gon said as he motioned to each of us respectively, and we just nodded in greeting. "You sure have taken the exam a lot. Are you the only one here who's tried a bunch of times, or are there others?" Gon asked curiously.
"I might hold the record, but yeah, there are others. For instance, that guy over there, number 255, Todo the Wrestler. Probably the strongest one here, and he's smarter than he looks. Over there is 103, Bourbon the Snake Charmer. He can really hold a grudge, so try not to get on his bad side. Let's see now. Number 191, Bodoro the Kung Fu Master. He's getting old, but he's still the best martial artist around. Then there are the brothers, Amori, Imori and Umori. They work great as a team, so they almost always do really well. And 384, Geretta the Huntsman. He specializes in killing all kinds of creatures with his blow dart and club. There are more, but they've taken the exam the most times." Tonpa explained, pointing out each applicant as he spoke about them. While he spoke, I just memorized what they're good at and how they will preform against me with my specialties. That way I can keep in mind who to avoid and who I can possibly take on if need be.
"Oh, wow!" Gon said as he and Tonpa started to talk more. I zoned out a bit and looked around to size up the competition when I saw someone bump into a clown looking dude with pink hair. I watched the pink haired guy attack the person who bumped into him and I was honestly unfased by it but I had to act shocked of course as to not raise suspicion of my background. I watched as the man's arms turned into small flowers it looked like because of the clown dude.
"My, how unusual. Seems this poor man's arms have turned into flower petals. Now you see them. Now you don't. You should be more careful, and do apologize if you bump into someone." The pink haired clown guy said condescendingly and I just blinked a few times. His specialty was something alright but it was also very confusing. Is he supposed to be like a jester or something?
"Just perfect. That psychopath is back again." Tonpa said in a worried tone.
"You know that guy?" Gon asked curiously.
"So, does that mean he tried last year?" Kurapika asked, seeming to be caught off guard still.
"Number 44. Hisoka, the Magician. He was the number one pick to pass last year's exam until he almost killed an examiner he didn't approve of." Tonpa explained.
"Then what the hell is he doing here?! They're letting him retake the exam after something like that?!" Leorio asked in shock and panic as he jumped back a bit.
"Of course they are. They change the content and examiners every year, and the examiners choose the new material. The devil himself could pass the Hunter Exam if the examiners say it's okay. It's how the whole thing works. Anyways, nobody likes the guy. I'd keep my distance if I were you." Tonpa explained and I nodded.
"Well, he definitely looks dangerous." Leorio said softly.
"Oh! I almost forgot! Let's have a toast to friendship. What do you say?" Tonpa asked as he pulled out some cans of soda.
"Hey, thanks! Yeah, don't mind if I do!" Leorio said happily as Tonpa held a can out for me and Leorio "Ah, I was dying of thirst. Thanks a lot buddy." He continued after me and him grabbed our drinks and Tonpa gave Gon and Kurapika one.
"Yeah! Thanks a lot!" Gon said happily
"Thank you." Kurapika said respectfully.
"Thanks! I was starting to get thirsty." I said with a small smile, this fake personality and voice I've been sporting since the boat were starting to get annoying although I did let myself relax with my fake personality every now and then. But now I really had to keep this persona up and act like normal. I couldn't help but over hear a bit of a nearby conversation about how Tonpa is the 'Rookie Crusher'. Maybe I'll just have to crush his spirits instead.
"Here's to new friends and good fortune. Cheers!" Tonpa said as the other 3 clicked cans with him but I just laughed slightly and shook my head. We then all opened our sodas and started to drink them. I drank mine without a problem and finished it pretty quickly. I could tell there was a laxative in it but it didn't effect me. All of the 'training' I had to go through as a child made me immune to it after all. Gon was the second one to take a drink and he spit it out immediately.
"I think this juice might've gone bad, Mr. Tonpa. It tastes funny." Gon said as Leorio spit out his more violently.
"Seriously? That was a close call." Leorio said in anger.
"Huh? That's odd. Really sorry about that." Tonpa said as Kurapika poured his out. "Please forgive me! I had no idea the juice was bad!" He said as he went on his knees.
"You don't have to apologize. What about you? Is your stomach okay?" Gon said innocently.
"It didn't taste bad to me. Can I get another one?" I asked innocently and I could see him tense slightly but he ignored my request for another one.
"I'm alright. I'm totally fine." Tonpa said as he looked up at us.
"Oh, good. I've tried all kinds of plants an grasses on the mountain back home, so I can usually taste when something's bad." Gon said with a bright smile.
"That's some talent you go there. Heh heh. Never seen anything like it." Tonpa said nervously. "Sorry about. I'll see you guys around." He said as he stood up and walked away.3rd Person POV
"Man, I thought he would never shut up." Leorio said.
'Said you, the most talkative old man I've ever met.' Skylynn thought as she just nodded and crossed her arms.
'Something isn't quite right about the crop of rookies this year. Like 294, Hanzo. The first time I talked to him, he actually seemed pretty gullible. I can tell he's no idiot. One wrong move, and I could've been in some serious trouble.' Tonpa thought before hearing a raddling sound and looking over at it. 'Speaking of trouble, there is 301. That guy just oozes danger. I know one thing. I'm not going anywhere near him. Then there's the one I really can't stand, 107, Nicolas. Just wait, you little bastard. I'm the one who's gonna break that snotty nose of yours.' He continued on his thoughts before being interrupted by someone calling his name.
"Hey! Mr. Tonpa! That juice was great! Got any more? I don't know if I'm just nervous, but I really am thirsty" Killua said with a smile.
"Uh... Oh! Of course!" Tonpa said with a nervous smile. 'What the hell? The laxative he drank should have taken effect by now.' He thought and glanced at where Skylynn, Gon, Kurapika and Leorio are talking. 'Same with that Coco girl...What's with these kids?' Tonpa thought as he looked back at Killua who was walking over. He then handed Killua one of the juices and watched in shock as Killua drank it. 'It's only a laxative, but still, if the kid drinks that much, he could die of dehydration.' Tonpa thought but was cut out of his thoughts when Killua began speaking again.
"Worried? Well don't be. I'll be fine. I've trained for this. Poisons don't hurt me." Killua said matter-of-factly.
"Impossible." Tonpa said in shock. 'That kid was actually able to tell what was in the juice? But if he knew, then why the hell did he drink it? Number 99, Killua. Damn. This year's rookies are completely insane. But so what? It just means crushing them will be all the more satisfying.' Tonpa thought as an alarm went off.(A/N: Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed! I've been taking a lot of time to make these chapters as accurate as possible because I feel like it should.
