"Hey, Dri. Could you cover those two tables in the back before you clock out?"
Fuck no.
"Of course, no problem."
I sluggishly made my way to the back of the restaurant. I had been here since 3 in the afternoon and it's going on 11 at night.
Came straight to work from school and had to take on an eight hour shift- even though I'm supposed to be part-time- with no breaks.
Perks of being the best server in the restaurant, I guess.
"Wow, you're beautiful."
"Wow. Thanks."
"That's all I get? A thanks?"
"I'm not sure what more you want, sir. I'm at work, and, actually, I have a table to get to. Can I get you a drink or something though?"
"Nah, but you can get me somethin' else."
I shifted my weight onto my left leg. "What's that?"
"Some ass."
"You have a nice night, sir."
Rolling my eyes, I finished the two tables Jack asked me to cover before going to the back to clock out.
Getting talked to like that was nothing new, honestly.
Was it annoying? Oh yes, very. Was I going to cry about? No. Not at all.
I laid my purse over my shoulder, walking out of Chili's to call my mom.
No answer.
to: mom👑💕 (11:51 pm)
hey, mom. i'm off. where are u?from: mom👑💕 (11:56 pm)
Working late. I'm sorry, honey.Groaning, I started my 30 minute walk home. I plugged my earphones into my ear, blocking out the fact that it was dark as hell and I was scared.
Usually she would make sure to be here days where I got off late especially if McKenzie wasn't here to give me a ride.
But I guess today was different.
Clearly.
I slung myself backwards onto my bed once I finally made it home.
This isn't my first time having to walk home, but it was definitely my first time having to walk home this late. I was somewhat still irritated that I had to walk in the first place, but at least I got here safely.
I'm home now, and all that matters right now is the fact that I can shower and lay in bed for the rest of the night. Of course only until I have to wake back up in 5 and a half hours for school.
After showering and getting into some pajamas, well an oversized school tee and boy shorts, I was a little confused because my mom still wasn't here yet.
Deciding to call her again, my irritation grew when she didn't answer. So I called my dad and guess what? He didn't answer either.
You know those parents that expect you to answer the phone every time they call no matter what you're doing, but every time you call them they don't answer? Those are the type of parents I have.
Hearing the alarm indicate that the front door was opening, I made my way downstairs.
"Geesh, took you long enough."
No reply.
"Mom?"
Again, no reply.
Walking into the dining room, I almost jumped out of my skin when I seen my mom leaning over the table.
"Mom, you didn't hear me?"
Still no answer.
Instead, she continued to stare at the table. I knew she wasn't admitting the wood-like surface because she always complained how dingy it was.
I heard her sniffling which made my heart instantly drop. I hated to hear, see, or even think about my mom crying which she rarely ever did.
But when she did, you knew it was something serious.
"Ma, what's wrong?"
She looked at me with a red face, mascara dripped down her cheeks, and bloodshot red eyes.
"Oh my goodness. Mom what's going on?"
"It's your dad, honey."
"What? What happened?"
"He's..." She stopped, shaking her head.
"What mom? He's what?"
My anxiety was definitely building up at this point, and her crying and not being able to finish a sentence was definitely not helping.
"He's dead, Rumi."
"What?"
"He was shot and killed."
