"She's definitely a psychopath" Ty mumbles after Joey and Jess leave the table.
"I still think she genuinely has bipolar" says Jason.
"I think she's nice... like she maybe just has an aggressive side to her?" I ask.
"I mean, sure." Tom says. "But if she cares about you deep down, she shouldn't do anything to intentionally hurt you. Joey is kinda the only one she'll listen to. I guess they have a lot in common, both coming from broken homes and -"
"Right Tom." warns Nathan, waving his hand towards him. "That's enough."
I'm guessing they don't want me to find out their problems right away.
"So, Emily. Do you have a boyfriend back in Scotland?" Asks a curious Ty, then giving a wink to the rest of the boys at the table. I roll my eyes.
Boys.
"Um well I do actually. His name is Liam. And you have just reminded me that I need to call him!"
And with that I stand up, and begin to walk towards the back doors to call him. With all the drama going on at lunch. I completely forgot.
I pull my phone out of my pocket to find 12 missed calls. From Liam. I slide the notification to call him back.
He answers in one ring.
"Liam?"
"Emmilllyyy" he slurs, clearly drunk. At 12:50pm. Typical.
"Liam I thought you had college." I sigh.
"Oh yeah fuck that shit." He says followed by rustling of duvet sheets and what sounded like a girl? Loudly sighing?
"Liam who's with you?"
"Who the hell are you to question me when you've not called me all day." He screeches down the phone. A sound I'm aware of too often. But it never fails to send shivers down my spine.
"It's my first day of school. I've been busy!!!"
"Busy whoring it up with all the guys already? I mean you did do that at home so I don't see why it would be any diff-"
"Not fucking this again. I'm not doing this. Talk to me when you've came out of your drinking bender. Fuck off."
Just as I'm about to pull the phone away from my ear to hang up, I hear his low, threatening tone of voice that is again too familiar for me.
"You know what I'll do to you if you don't keep US up. I'll ruin your life, you know that Em."
And with that he ends the call.
I'm left standing with tears welling up in my eyes, looking over at the table with Tom, Ty and Jason laughing oblivious of me standing in the distance.
I stood and wiped my eyes and began to head back into the direction of the table.
Until a strong hand grabs my shoulder making me instantly turn round.
"Emily?"
"What"
It was Joey. His hand ruffled through his hair, he looked concerned, he angled his head slightly to observe me and could see the tears that were still welled up in my eyes.
"You look upset, what's the matter? Who was on the phone?"
"Like you give a shit Joey, seeing as you've not said one nice word to me the whole of lunch time."
"Walk?" He asks, with a guilty look on his face.
I look up to his hooded glistening green eyes, how could anyone say no to him?
It's like he's looking into my soul, like I'm the only person standing in this atrium, I'm all that matters. Just me and him.
I slowly nod.
He reaches out his hand and puts his backpack over his other shoulder.
"Come with me" he says.
I hold onto his hand as he leads me out towards the front door of the school, taking one last glance of the table, seeing Jess happily eating her McNuggets.
Just me and Joey.
