I sat at the desk, my eyes fixed determinedly on the dent in the wall that had appeared sometime last year after one of the jocks had tried to punch some kid and missed the kid. He had broken his hand, but he cracked up at first after he saw the dent. He even wrote his name under it once he could use his hand again. Dumba$$. Anyway, the reason I was giving the wall dent a staredown was because the person who I really wanted to stare down was sitting next to me, engaged in a hushed whisper session with her best friend, Maria Harcourt. They kept sneaking glances at me, not that I was going to let on that it was bothering me. Ignore them. Right. Maria suddenly exploded in giggles, trying to contain them but not managing to. They were obviously directed at me. Mentally brushing off the b*tchy girls sitting next to me was getting more and more difficult. Madison snickered, probably making another snide comment about me. I checked my watch. I still had half an hour left. Whatever, it’s not like she could hate me any more, I figured.

“Madison, I didn’t know you found me that attractive. You’ve been practically staring at me for the past thirty minutes. You can just take a picture, if you like,” I told her and Maria, smirking.

Madison blinked at me for a second, surprised. Then she pulled out her iPhone and snapped a picture of me. I stared at her, confused as hell. I hadn’t actually expected her to take a picture of me. But she wasn’t done yet. She took yet another picture, this one probably being extremely unattractive. I didn’t even know what she was going to do with that. Judging by the wide grin splitting her face, it was probably nothing good. Annoyed by the fact that she had one-upped me, I turned my head back to the wall and continued giving the dent a deathstare.

While I contemplated the no longer interesting wall, Madison and her friend burst out into raucous laughter once again.

“Hey, hot stuff, check your Facebook,” Madison whisper-yelled.

I looked away from the wall and gave her a long stare before pulling out my phone and opening my Facebook. I hardly used the thing, it only ever really came in useful when I had a project with other people. As soon as I opened my page, I was notified that I’d been tagged in a photo. I checked it, and it was from my favorite person of all time. Madison. The picture turned out to be the one that she had taken a second ago. Needless to say, it was not attractive. It was captioned, “number one on the list!” I turned to Madison.

“Thanks a bunch,” I told her, annoyed. She merely smiled back at me, faking innocence.

“Just helping you to get your image out there!” she rallied back cheerfully.

I checked my watch again. I still had ten minutes of hell left. Well, those were ten minutes that I could use to make the room hell for all of us. I pulled out my iPhone and started playing Nine Days music on full blast. Madison and Maria both stared at me, then burst out laughing.

“What?” I asked coolly.

“Behind you,” Madison said, choking on her laughter.

I turned around to see Mr. Smith wearing the biggest frown I’d ever seen anyone wear.

“Ms. Evans, if you would please turn that off,” he said, his frown not budging an inch. I reached down and paused it.

“You have detention tomorrow, too.”

“But-“

He gave me a piercing glare.

I slumped down in my chair, stabbing the desk with my capped pen.

“I’d appreciate it if you didn’t try to damage school property, Ms. Evans,” he said, clearly annoyed. I glared up at him and desisted stabbing the desk, returning to watching the wall dent. I counted the seconds as they ticked down, grabbing my things and sprinting for the door as soon as possible once time was up.
