“Next time, you guys are being the bait.”

Patrick looked over at Andy who had just spoken as all three of them entered the warehouse (which to them was both headquarters and home) and removed his soaking wet jacket and threw it on the small, scruffy sofa nearby. They were all exhausted from the fight and even though they had eventually won, they had all gotten beaten and bruised quite badly, particularly Andy, who had a long cut running across his forearm that was still bleeding from where one of the vampires had managed to grab hold of one of his knives and attacked him with it. Surprisingly, that wasn’t what concerned Patrick the most however; the thing that concerned him was that vampire with the dark hair….

It was Joe who responded to Andy's comment: “Chill out, Andy. What’s wrong with being bait? Are you scared or something?”

Andy was clearly not amused by Joe's remark. “If you were stood out there, waiting to be attacked by blood-sucking monsters and the only thing standing between you living and dying is you and Patrick, you’d be scared too.”

“What’s wrong with us?” Asked Joe, sounding half offended.

Andy snorted but didn’t reply while Joe turned and stalked out of the room to go put the weapons away. Andy expected Patrick to make a remark or even tell both of them to shut up, but instead, Patrick took off his hat and slumped down onto the sofa and tilted his head upwards slightly to stare at the ceiling, lost in his own thoughts.

So much so, he didn’t even register Andy when he threw himself over the top of the sofa and landed right next to Patrick, sending the sofa into a slight jerky movement.

Andy moved a hand through his long brown hair and looked at Patrick. “Are you okay?”

Patrick hardly heard him over his own thoughts. Why would that vampire run off? Was he working for them?

It wasn’t until Andy punched Patrick on the arm that he snapped back to reality. Patrick jumped slightly.

Andy laughed. “Dude, what’s wrong? We kicked serious vampire ass tonight!” he said beaming.

“Yeah….” Said Patrick. “It’s just that….well…something is bothering me slightly.” he finished lamely.

“Like what?”

Before Patrick could respond, Joe had re-entered the room and was looking down at his phone in his hand, the slightly muffled and static sound of screaming, grunting and hissing coming from it.

Andy turned towards Joe. “What the hell are you watching?”

“Us,” replied Joe, not bothering to look up from the screen. “I put my phone in my pocket with the camera sticking out, set it to record, and recorded us fighting.”

“Why?” asked Andy.

Joe shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe for a kind of legacy thing, you know. So people can remember our work once we’re dead.”

Patrick stood up. “If you spend more time focusing on recording yourself than fighting vampires, you will be dead.” He moved towards Joe. “Let me see it.”

But before Joe could even respond or make a slight move to give the phone to him, Patrick had already snatched the phone from his hand and put it in his pocket.

“Hey!” Joe exclaimed. “That’s my phone!”

“Relax, I just want to take a look at it later.” said Patrick.

By now, Andy had stood up to join them. “Why? It’s not like you’ll find anything useful, especially with Joe’s crappy recording skills.” to which Joe shot him a look.

“Maybe.” Patrick sighed. Or maybe not.

It was 2pm in the afternoon the next day when Patrick was sat at his desk watching the video Joe had recorded from the fight the night before. Joe and Andy were in the other rooms asleep (you kinda had to be awake during the night when you were a vampire hunter) while Patrick had made the excuse that he needed to fix one of the guns that had malfunctioned, to which Andy and rolled his eyes and muttered the word ‘again’ before heading off to sleep, but instead, Patrick was really watching the video and making notes, scrawling words from observations he was making about one part in particular: the part where the dark haired vampire had attacked the female vampire that was about to kill Andy and saved Andy’s life.

He didn’t really want to say anything to Andy or Joe. They’d say he was being stupid and it was just another vampire, and in a way, Patrick knew they would be right but he couldn’t help shake the feeling of foreboding, like this was all part of something….different.

As Patrick watched the video, there were a number of questions he could think of: Why did the vampire save Andy? Why didn’t he attack us? Why didn’t we attack him? He is a vampire after all. Was he planning something? Patrick wrote each question down but when trying to come up with an answer for each, his mind was blank. Patrick turned his attention back to the phone screen where he watched the shaking movements from the camera capture the scene, absorbing the events as the vampire leaped up behind Andy, knocking the female vampire over before snapping her neck and turning his head towards them, black hair covering his eyes and fangs flashing. It was unusual behaviour for a vampire, to kill his own kind- the only time they really did was for leadership purposes but this clearly wasn't one of those times.
Is he a threat? If so, why did we just stand there?

Realising he was not going to get any answers anytime soon, Patrick sighed, slammed his notebook shut, gathered up his notes, put them in his pocket and turned off the video but not before reading over them one last time.

The sun had just gone down when Pete was wondering the empty streets. He had spent the entire day hiding in an abandoned house away from the horrors of the sunlight and then eventually forced himself to drink the blood of a stray cat he found wondering around in order to quench the dying thirst in his throat despite the fact he had tried so hard to ignore it.

He hated every second of it.

Now, Pete found himself wondering aimlessly around the city, trying to figure out what to do. He looked down at the floor. Why the fuck didn’t they kill me? They’re vampire hunters! Isn’t that what they’re supposed to do? Kill vampires like-

He didn’t want to say ‘like me’ but he knew it was true.

At that moment, Pete looked up but instantly regretted it as he saw three vampires headed straight in his direction, straight towards him, and they looked pretty dangerous. Shit. Pete thought and turned around in an attempt to avoid them and get away but instead was face to face with another three vampires. He thought if he could dodge them, that he could get away, but it was too late.

They surrounded him. He was trapped.

“What the fuck do you want?” Pete growled.

The vampire closest to him stepped forward. He had light blond hair stuck up in spikes and a large lip piercing. He flashed his fangs as he spoke as if in an attempt to scare Pete. “Our master wanted us to find you and bring you back with us.”

Pete looked around at the circling vampires and knew the best idea would be to go with them, but instead he laughed. “If you mean William, then you can go tell him to piss off.”

The blonde vampire's lip twitched into a sinister smile that sent a shiver down Pete’s spine. “If you won’t come with us willingly, then we will have to force you.”

The vampires then moved closer as if in synchronisation. Pete knew they wouldn’t leave without a fight.

Pete positioned himself, ready to fight. This is going to be fun, he thought.
