In the world there are four powers that people have. There’s fire, they can make flames out of nothing, in the palm of their hands. There’s water, they make water and can control it and the way it flows. Then there’s ice, who can freeze water and can withstand extreme cold temperatures. And then there’s ground. They can control stone and rocks. But there’s an extra power. Its a very rare power that almost no one gets. It is said to be bestowed onto the birth of a special one. This power is lightning. They can create storms and bolts of lightning in their bare hands.

Now it is very rare for someone to have no powers as well. Jake is one with no powers. He is bullied in school for it everyday. Jake realized he was different at age eight when they started in school on how to use their powers. He saw he could do nothing. Now at age sixteen with thick brown hair and brown eyes and blue glasses, he gave up on the idea of having his own powers and accepted the fact that he was and always will be different.

Jake was walking to school when the bus passed by and as it did one of the jocks at the school through a tiny flame at Jake’s arm. He flinched as the entire bus laughed. Jake shrugged it off and continued on his way to school. As soon as he walked into school he was greeted by another jock who shoved him as soon as he walked into the school. The jock snickered, “Hey loser.” Jake snarled a little and shook it off and went to homeroom. He met up with Ben.

Ben is Jake’s best friend since they were three, before they knew about the powers people have so luckily they were still friends even after they learned about the powers. Ben was taller than Jake. Jake is about medium height. Ben smiled as he saw Jake walk through the entryway of their homeroom class. “Hey Jake!” He shouted while waving his hand in the air. Jake smiled a little and walked over to Ben. “ Hey Ben what’s up?” Ben was happy. “ Not much man. How was your walk to school?” “Fine till some ass threw fire at my arm.” Ben’s smile faded. “ Hey just ignore them. Its not a big deal. They’re probably jealous that you’re different.” Jake chuckled.

Just then there was a loud bang. Some kid threw his chair into the desk. The kid is as tall as Ben. He had long blonde hair and was a bit pale. He walked out of the room suddenly. Jake turned to Ben. “Who was that?” Ben closed his eyes and shrugged. “Hell if I know. All I know is he’s a transfer student. The next few weeks we’ll be getting more of them.” Jake looked back at the now empty desk then back to Ben. “ Do you think they’ll all be like that?” Jake asked. “ Sure as heck hope not. This school sucks as it is. No need to add more reasons to why it sucks.” Ben laughed a little. Jake felt another tiny burning sensation on his arm and flinched. He looked over and saw more jocks and they started laughing. One noticed Jake staring at him. He stood up and stared into Jake’s eyes. “What are you looking at you powerless freak?” The jocks laughed more and Jake snarled more and he was about to stand up but Ben grabbed his arm. “They’re not worth your time Jake. Just let it go.” Jake looked at Ben then back at the jocks. He sighed. “Fine I wont do anything, again.” Ben looked at jake. “ On a different note did you hear about that mysterious murder?” Jake had. A man was murdered with a mysterious power no one has ever seen before. Police officials say its some kind of man-made power. Jake nodded his head. Ben closed his eyes. “ They say they think its something that was created. I just hope it was meant for one time use only but who knows anymore with this world.” Jake sat still and started to space out.

Just then the bell rang and Ben shot up and then said proudly, “Math time! Come on Jake! Jake?” He looked down at Jake who was lost in his own thoughts. Ben always wondered how difficult it must be to be treated the way Jake is. To be pushed around, bullied, to have nothing to defend himself with. Ben knew he would have to protect Jake. At least until he got a power of his own. Ben has water powers. He watered his hand and slapped Jake lightly to snap him out of his trance like state. Jake widened his eyes and looked up at Ben. “ Math time Jake come on.” Jake sighed and sat up.

They were walking in the hallway and so Jake brought up Ben’s girlfriend. “How’s Monique?” “She’s fine. Sick today but she’s okay. I really wish I could be there with her but oh well. She wants me to stay with my perfect attendance.” Ben has had perfect attendance for the past three years of school. Jake started to say something. “ Well you can alwa-” Just then a giant shroud of dark clouds or smoke surrounded them and the entire hallway. They both tensed up. Then the sound of a gunshot went off. There was an ear piercing scream and then something banged against the metal locker. The dark smoke faded away. There, laying on the ground was the lifeless body of the jock that threw fire at him earlier. A gunshot wound through his head. He looked up and saw the boy from homeroom. He looked back at Jake and gave a smirk. Jake staggered back and the mysterious boy walked off like nothing happened. Jake started to breathe heavily. An ambulance and police showed up.

They questioned almost the entire school. Jake didn’t know what to say to them. If he should mention the mysterious boy or not. The police officer cleared his throat. “ We chose to interview you last.” Jake was confused. “Why me?” The officer stood up out of his chair. “ From some reports people say you were the one who most likely killed him.” Jake eyes widened and his heart stopped. Chills ran up his spine. His blood froze to an amazingly low temperature to where he thought he had ice powers. Jake finally managed to make words again. “M-me? Why would they think it was me?” “ They say he bullied you a lot and that you have no powers of your own. Its only natural that if you have no powers that you use a weapon of some sort. So be frank with me kid, were you the one who shot this poor boy?” Jake was shocked by how many people tried framing him. Jake shook his head. “ No sir you can look at the cameras. Me and my friend were nowhere near him.” The officer called someone in and they brought in an old vhs tape. It was the camera surveillance tape. They played it. They saw Jake and Ben standing there defenseless. The officer nodded. “Well it seems youre telling the truth. But kid do you have any idea on who could be the one behind this murder?” Jake shook his head again” No sir.” The cop sighed. “ The same darkness was used here as it was in the murder yesterday. He’s starting something and we don’t know what that is. We need all the help we can get,” He gave Jake a card with a name and a phone number. “ If you learn anything, anything at all, give this number a call and tell us. The force has a very bad feeling about this. We feel that this isn’t his last striking point. We think he has a greater motive.” After that, the cop walked out of the room and the counselor told him he could go home.

Jake walked home. The bus passed by again and Jake looked up and everyone on the bus gave him dirty looks. Jake shrugged the cold stares off, but he couldn’t get past the thoughts of that mysterious boy’s face. They haunted him. What if he was next? Jake shuddered. He got home and went to his room. He had a secret wall in his room which hid his sword. Jake had been practicing with a sword since he was eight. He entered a passcode, and the wall split into two and slid apart. Inside, was his blue handle-laced katana. He grabbed and closed the hidden doors. He layed on his bed and thought about what might happen if that came after him. He kept his blade close to him and fell asleep.
