Attention passengers we will be arriving in New York shortly prepare to land
We're almost there I thought as I loosened my grip on the seat, I've always hated flying but this journey was by far the worst.
My dad and I were leaving Ireland. We were moving to Queens where he grew up for a fresh start after everything we went through with my mom... It was my dad's idea and I don't think I gave it much thought, until I was on the plane. I thought maybe if I didn't think about it and focus on other things, I could forget about the fact we were in a metal death trap thousands of feet in the air that could fall from the sky at any moment. So, I thought about our new apartment, my new school, new people and it just stressed me out more.
I'm not really a social person I had one best friend, Katie, but she couldn't come to New York no matter how much she tried to get in the suitcase... We were really, really close we loved the same things art, reading books, we had the same taste in music and loved the same subjects at my old school, I was classed as a "nerd" because I loved maths and science but mostly history. I assume it will be pretty much the same here. The schools in America are completely different then what I'm use to; no uniform, we don't learn Irish and no leaving cert (THANK GOD!!) I hope people like me here I need to make a good impression.
Katie has told me not to replace her but, how could I we are literally the same person. When she found out I was moving to New York she brought up superheroes which, I hadn't even considered! I mean I'm kind of a fan... okay, a HUGE fan, like I starting hyperventilating thinking of these guys just walking down the street like what do I do if I see Captain America walking out of Starbucks seriously do I wave, ignore him, BOW!?? Ugh, I'm gonna embarrass myself, I have a weird feeling this whole move might be a bit of a disaster....
Katie has me under strict order to call her everyday and tell her all the gossip, and talk about all the America boys at my new school, maybe they'll be actually decent, unlike the ones at my old school.
I looked out the window and finally see bits of building emerging from the clouds. The seatbelt indicator lit up and I grasped onto my seat belt tightly. I could see the full city from above, wow, it was so beautiful. All the light shining, crowds of people and heavy traffic, it was like a concrete jungle, just how Alicia Keys described it. I was lost in the moment of it all that, I wasn't paying any attention to the landing and dove face first into the seat in front of me. Not the most impressive start.
After waiting a couple of minute, the indicator light turned off and, we all stood up to leave. I grabbed my carry-on and made my way towards the steps. I took my time getting down the seemingly steep steps but, it didn't help because I almost fell into the lady below me and manged to drop my phone, thankful though it didn't crack. I was hoping that maybe I wouldn't be as clumsy when I got here but somethings never change.
