Salam, hello, hola, all those things. I started this book as a place to share my views on the world, being Pakistani, life and stuff that doesn't really require a long, deep philosophical explanation. Like brownies.
Anyway, I don't want to pretend I write great poems... 'cause I don't. I just like this as a way to express my thoughts. I am a Pakistani, and sometimes I worry for my country and the road it is going down. I still love it though.
How Long?
The rope is thick, worn from use
and the flag hangs limp, dejected.
How long has it been that it has not waved
proudly in the wind?
our hands move, and the rope comes loose.
The flag, with years of oaths and promises, never kept.
How long has it been that it has not waved,
with tangible dignity?
The soldier, who takes a bullet to the heart
so that nothing taints the green.
How long has it been since it was raised
onto the pole, by loving hands?
Steadily, the flag rises, the force of the people behind it.
Patriots and veterans, living each day for their country.
How long has it been that it has not seen
days of peace and prosperity?
The leaders who do not lead, do not care,
who see the green as a thing of trade.
How long has it been since they raised the star and crescent,
swore on blood and life to protect?
My flag is half-way up, yet not rising any further,
the sweat of my people, their efforts, all spent.
How long will it take for the flag to reach the top,
amidst victory and tears?
I dream of the day when the crescent and moon are with the sky
country men together, leaders ahead, watching our flag wave forevermore.
How long will it be, how much sacrifice will it take,
before my dream takes form?
