Integumentary System

Overview

The skin and its accessory structures constitute the integumentary system

Skin

* Large waterproof covering

*Largest organ in the body

*UV and chemical protection

*The layers of skin include epidermic, dermis and hypodermis

Accessory structures

-Hair, nails, skin glands

The layers of the skin

*Epidermis  [ Upper layer]

*Dermis  [Lower layer]

Dense connective tissue

Connects skin to fat and muscle

*Hypodermis  [Subcutaneous layer below dermis]

Loose connective tissue and adipose tissues

Layers of Epidermis

1. Stratum corneum

-Outermost layer

-Dead, keratinized cells

-Barrier to light, heat, chemicals, microorganisms

2. Stratum lucidum

-One/ two cells layers thick

-Flat and transparent

-Difficult to see

3.Stratum granulosum

-Two/three layers

-Flattened cells

-Active keratinization

-Lose nuclei [dying off]

-compact and brittle

4.Stratum spinosum

Several layers of spiny-shaped cells

Contain Desmosomes [interlocking cellular bridges which held together cells]
