Lymphatic system
Function of lymphatic system
*Collect and transport tissue fluids from intercellular spaces in all the tissues
to the veins in the blood system.
*Return plasma proteins to the bloodstream
*Transport foreign particles to lymph nodes
*Defense mechanism [lymph nodes filter foreign particles from lymph before return to bloodstream]
*Absorb and transport fats and fat-soluble vitamins from the villi in the small intestine to the bloodstream via the lacteals and lymph vessels
Lymph
- Clear yellowish tissues fluid [ originates from plasma]
-Include water and substances that have passed thru lymphatic capillary wall
-[ Any fluid in between the cell into the lymphatic capillaries are lymph]
Function
Lymph formation prevents accumulation of excess fluid fluid [edema]
Lymph return smaller protein molecules and fluid into the bloodstream
Transport foreign particles to the lymph nodes
Lymphatic Vessels
Lymph capillaries forms lymph vessels
Lymph capillaries + lymph vessels = Lymphatics
Lymphatics unite and form larger vessels = lymphatic trunks
Lymph capillaries
*Located between cells
*Receive tissue fluid through their thin wall
Lymphatic trunks
-Drain lymph from relatively large regions of the body
-Lumbar trunk [drains lower extremities and pelvis]
-Intestinal trunk [drains abdominal region]
-Bron-cho-media-stinal & intercostal trunks [drain thorax]
-Subclavian trunk [drains upper extremities]
-Jugular trunk [drains head and neck]
Lymphatic trunks leads to 2 collecting ducts
-Thoracic duct [on left subclavian vein ]
-Right lymphatic duct [on right subclavian vein]
Lymphatic pathway
Lymphatic System disorder
*Lymphoma [ affects immune system]
- swelling in legs/ankle
-Loss of appetite
-Weight loss
-Fever
*HIV/ AIDS
HIV --- human immuno-deficiency virus
-Rapid weight loss
-Memory loss, depression
-Prolong swelling of the lymph glands in the armpits, groin/ neck
