All of my life I'd felt different.
Now, I don't mean that to sound cliche, but it's true. The people around me would seem too normal, they'd always look at me differently. I'd always seem a bit out of place in California, standing out from the rest of blonde, tanned humans.
Turned out, I really was different. I learned that on my seventeenth birthday, when I accidentally set the curtains of my living room on fire just by looking at them.
" A witch " I had mumbled indifferently, a part of me starting to believe that my mother might be crazy. She nodded, curly blonde hair bouncing with the movement.
" Your powers showed fairly late " A confused tone had settled on her voice by now, before turning back into the chirpy sounds I was used to " But it's normal I believe! Ah, i'm so happy for you baby "
It had been four months since that moment, when my mother finally decided to tell me the biggest secret of my existence. To me, witches were something i'd only encountered on fairy tales like any other kid, and it was confusing to suddenly realize that maybe those stories were true.
Now, four months later, I was plopping two suitcases full of clothes in the unfamiliar bed. Learning about the story of witches since the begging was hard, but moving in another country and starting a school specifically for witches was 10 times harder.
I looked around the dimly lit room, which had two other beds across mine. It was september, the start of the new semester in the academy of witches, which was hidden in London. You'd guess it was a normal school from the looks of it , if you were ever able to find it. It was protected with a billion spells to make it invisible to the human eye.
I turned my dark eyes to Jane, my dear mother, who was sobbing silently while handing me everything I needed. I felt a pang of guilt for having to leave her alone all the way to Cali, but she promised me she'd be fine.
" I'm so proud of you Noah " She cooed " I know you're going to be an amazing witch "
I hugged her one last time, before seeing her disappear in the weird white carriage that brought us here in the first place. I sighed before turning back and going to my room, the pathway in this huge place making it a whole lot harder for me without my mothers help.
Finally making it up to my room, the numbers 304 at the door. I opened it, looking up to meet eyes with electric blue hair.
I smiled lightly at the girl who was presumably one of my roommates " Hello " I mumbled.
She popped a piece of pink bubble gum before turning around to face me, extending a hand. " Hi! I'm Iris "
" Noah " I nodded, shaking her hand which was painted in black polish. I noticed her outfit choice, black skirt with a crop top and a big fluffy jacket the same color of her hair. Tights with holes in them covered her thighs and a pair of leather boots. I noticed she looked just like those girls on tumblr, and immediately fell kind of in love with the way she held herself.
" First year ?" She asked, turning around again to place some clothes in their place. I nodded, before realizing she couldn't see me.
" yeah" I said timidly " I discovered I had powers a couple months ago "
" Oh damn" Iris mumbled " that's kinda late. you may have a little bit of trouble adjusting "
That did nothing to help my nerves settle, but I tried not to show it.
" Don't worry though " She chirped " I'll help you as much as I can. "
Looking up, I smiled her way in gratitude.
