"ah, gerard." the middle aged man held out his hand as gerard shook it firmly, acting as if he was sane.
"stewart." gerard responded, nodding his head.
"and, michael." he turned his head to the younger boy. he wouldn't look up, keeping his eyes glued to the ground. the man only nodded before adjusting his suit and walked off.
"you're gonna have to talk." gerard mumbled to him, looking around the high-class room.
"shut up, gerard." he said back, chewing on his bottom lip.
"i know, it's shit. coming back to this family reunion which always ends up in a disaster-"
"because of you." he looked up, teary-eyed and his lip quivering.
"only because aunt marie has to always say something." gerard retorted, shifting around.
"so, we have to act like we love each other." he nodded, sitting down next to him.
"mikey-"
"pete's scared to even talk to me now, and that's all of your fault." he got choked up on his words, taking a sip of the water.
"i know you're gay. especially for him." gerard said through his teeth, catching the younger boy's attention easily.
"i'm not-"
"look at the boys. they're all grown up!" their grandmother smiled down at them, pulling the both of the boys into a hug.
as everyone else began to arrive, gerard just kept drawing. his brother kept trying to catch a look to where gerard would just hide it.
during dinner, they all made small talk. gerard didn't talk for the majority of the dinner, sticking to hisself and eating in portions. mikey simply rejected the dinner, pushing his plate away.
"gerard, how have you been?" his uncle spoke up, still chewing his food. gerard didn't know exactly what to say, feeling everyone looking at him so intently. nobody had ever been so interested in such a boy like him.
"go on." his brother mumbled, staring up at him.
"fine." gerard nodded, taking a sip of water.
"michael, why are you not eating?" aunt marie spoke up, making both gerard and his brother tense.
"just not hungry- i had a heavy lunch." he lied, chewing on his nails.
"you look rather pale." she went on, leaning over the table.
"i-i-i don't know why.." he stuttered, feeling his heart rate pick up.
"and skinny, too." his uncle added, scanning him with his eyes.
"i'm-"
"please, may you just eat?" gerard interrupted, shooting a glare at his relatives. they looked at each other before nodding and continuing to eat. his brother looked up at him, mouthing, "thanks" with a slight smile. gerard only nodded, observing all of his relatives once more.
"i'll be back." his brother whispered, standing up and walking to the nearest bathroom. now gerard was there alone. and everyone was looking at him.
"your brother seems a bit traumatized, gerard." his grandfather spoke up, clasping his hands together on the table.
"he's fine, he just hasn't been getting a lot of sleep lately." gerard lied, continuing to check when his brother was going to return.
"this is the first time he has came out of his room in... 2 weeks? i think?" his mother faced everyone, yet ignoring gerard. he really never understood why she had to tell them everything.
"oh my," aunt marie gasped. "has he been eating alright?"
"yes he has, but he only comes out at night to eat." his mom responded again, shooting an eye at gerard. he rolled his eyes and slanted his posture.
"mom, can i talk to you.. in private?" gerard asked, standing up. his mother nodded in response, following him down the hallway.
"what the fuck was that!" gerard whispered, almost throwing her up against the wall.
"gerard, don't take that tone with me-"
"that's HIS personal information that you don't have to tell the rest of the family AT ALL. you don't understand your goddamn boundaries." gerard scoffed, leaning back.
"don't make a scene." she snapped back through her teeth, raising a finger.
"you were the one making a fucking scene, exploiting him behind his back!" gerard rose his voice, leaning closer to her.
"you do this every time! every single time!" his mother stormed out, leaving him alone in the hallway. he stood there, just glancing around the place. he already hated it, and it had barely been an hour.
"what happened?" his brother came out of nowhere, looking up at him.
"nothing, but i'm going home." gerard gave a reassuring look at him before looking back down.
"count me in." his brother agreed, following him right out the door.
———
gerard flopped back onto his bed, closing his eyes. his mom was still not home and his brother was back in his room, crying most likely. only minutes ago, gerard had been screaming at the younger boy as loud as he could. that was, of course, before he pushed him down the stairs.
he started having flashbacks to earlier during school. what all happened at lunch and in that bathroom. it was nothing gerard would've ever expected. yet, he was the one who initiated it. but also, frank had went along with it.
gerard still felt no remorse whatsoever. he still was tempted to singlehandedly murder him. mostly, he wanted to make that friend of his feel some pain. gerard thought it was just ridiculous that he thought he was just some puny, emo kid. oh, did he have a surprise for him..
