"You WHAT?!" Devyn screamed from the other end of the line of Kayla's cell phone.  It was Monday morning, Zac and Isaac were still sleeping and Kayla felt like she was going to explode if she didn't talk to someone soon. Her initial thought was to call Taylor, but she knew he was busy.

"Hellooooo?" Devyn spoke into the phone, breaking Kayla's thoughts, "What do you mean you slept with him?  Again? At the lake?"

"Okay, first of all, stop screaming at me," Kayla fired back as she threw her book bag into the trunk of her car.  She made her way into the driver's seat, shut the door and pulled her seatbelt on. "Secondly, I'm coming over so do you wanna go somewhere and talk or are we good at your house?"

"We're good here.  My parents are at work already, so it's just us.  But you are telling me everything when you get here!"

"Yes, I will.  See you in a few."  Kayla tossed her phone onto the passenger seat, and continued the short drive to Devyn's house, a million and one thoughts running through her mind.  She pulled up to the curb in front of her friend's house and grabbed her cell phone before popping open her trunk.  She retrieved her belongings and made her way to the front door.  Each step felt heavier than the last, and she wasn't sure why she felt so nervous to talk to Devyn.  She'd always been open with her about her relationship with Zac.  Before she could ring the bell, the front door flew open. "Stalker, much?" Kayla joked.

Devyn rolled her eyes, "You only got here in record time.  All I did was hang up and walk down the stairs and I heard your car pulling up.  Come on," she said as she closed the door behind Kayla.  She made her way towards the living room, then turned to ask Kayla if she wanted anything to drink.  Kayla asked for water before settling down in the over-sized chair that matched Devyn's couch.  Devyn emerged from her kitchen with a few bottles of water, handing one over to Kayla and setting another one on the coffee table in front of her.  She took a seat on the couch and curled up.  She took a sip of her water, replaced the cap and turned towards Kayla.

"Spill," Devyn requested.

"I slept with Zac yesterday," Kayla began.

"At the lake, I know, why?  I thought you said you weren't going to anymore until he made a decision?" Devyn was careful with her tone.  She wasn't judging Kayla, she just wanted to make sure her friend didn't end up more hurt than she'd already been.

"I know,"Kayla began, dropping her head into her hands for a moment, "It's just.... okay, listen, I have to tell you something else before I go on with this story."  She knew the only way to explain what was truly happening was to tell her friend the entire truth.

Devyn widened her eyes at the sound of Kayla's words, but didn't speak.

"Do you remember when I told you I was going to the carnival with Zac a couple months ago?"  Devyn nodded, and Kayla continued, "Well, we went to the lake that night and we had a pretty intense talk.  We also got high which could be why I chose that moment to confront him about Kate, but whatever, we got to talking and he told me that the morning Kate broke up with him, he'd actually called her first to break up with her, because he'd decided he wanted us to be together.  She just beat him to the punch, I guess."  Kayla looked over at Devyn, who shifted her body on the couch, on the edge of every word she was hearing. "So I basically told him that even though that was his intention, that we couldn't be together until he sorted out all of his feelings once and for all and was honest with the both of us.  No matter what his choice was and that for the time being, we had to just be friends.  But really just be friends, like we used to be.  Not friends who sometimes sleep together."

Devyn snorted at that, louder than she'd meant to, causing Kayla to pause, "Sorry," she said, "It's just, let's be honest, do you seriously believe that you and Zac can go back to just that type of friendship?  I mean, I love you Kayla and I know in your heart that's what you want, but you are in love with him.  And whether you want to see it or not, Kate or no Kate, he's in love with you too."
