"Should we tell Lucia?"
"What do you mean, 'should we tell Lucia'?! Of course we have to tell her, we're quadruplets, we need to be open- no secrets! Remember?" Dorothy practically screamed in Bee's face in Polish,
"But...but isn't it better if she found out herself?"
"Well, one way or another she's going to find out that we knew that Cerise and Carter like each other all along!!"
Bee shook her head, "I don't think it's for us to say."
"Oh my god."
They both looked at me expectantly and I blinked back.
"What?" I asked, reverting back to English,
They shared a look that screamed one word; 'honestly?!'.
"Have you been listening?" Bee hissed at me, her irritation obvious.
"Yes."
"Then what's 'what'?"
I just gave her a shrug but jumped to the subject, "Shouldn't we know more about what the situation it is before actually making an official decision?"
Dorothy sat back on her heels for a minute, her mass of wavy blonde hair, identical to Bee's lifting in the breeze. She looked like a fairy, the way she dressed was just adorable.
She snapped her fingers and grinned at us, "Let's tell Carter that we go to Drama Club on Thursdays! If he comes- he's interested in Cerise, if he doesn't- he's not and if he does come we can see his behaviour!" she giggled, "I'm a genius!"
--------
We all went to the Sunken Garden where Carter and his friends usually where, and sat down at the bench on the end.
"So, who's going to go?" I asked, "I can't go, I don't know Cater that well."
Dorothy wrinkled her nose, "Bee's going to have to. I'm not close to him either. Hey Bee, you played a duet with him in the Summer Concert last year right? And did a drama piece for the Autumn Showcase last year."
"Yes."
"Just go up to a random guy nearby and ask him if he's interested in going to Drama Club as we're seriously lacking in guys. Then pretend-" I began,
"To notice him and rush over and tell him about Drama Club since you did a drama piece with him and blah blah blah, then the lacking guys problem-" Dorothy continued.
"And invite him to come. And remember to ask the others along if they're with them or it's going to come off as rude." I finished as Dorothy leaned to look down the garden to check where they are.
"Wait, wait, Bee, go round the Art Tower and come back round as if you just came out of the drama department."
"Okay."
We watched her disappear around the corner and launched into a debate about whether Snape was forgivable for being ghastly to Harry and Ron- not to mention being a Death Eater. AND only caring about Lily's well being.
"So I was wondering.... if you'd like to come with us....?"
"To the...?"
Both of us knew those voices.
Deanne and Carter.
We turned slowly around to the rhododendrons, our eyes round like saucers. What? How on Earth...?
Deanne had parked her butt right in front of us, the top of her dark-chocolate-brown hair just visible above the poisonous plant while the whole of Carter's head was visible. Did Deanne know we were here? Did she know about Lucia? Was that why she decided to stand right in front of us, within earshot to ask Carter out?
"To hang out at the park- as we always do." Her voice was silky soft, alluring and poisonous-berry-sweet.
We? Did that mean her Inner Circle 'we' or the entire Outer Circle 'we' or Carter and her 'we'?
"Sorry, Deanne, I can't- I was meeting with a few friends."
"Who?" she cut in, "Who..?" she amended.
Carter shifted on his feet- Nervous, "Well, we decided to go to Ambrus' house and-"
"No, I asked who."
"Me, Dominik, Ambrus, Hiroshi." Carter said, a touch of annoyance in his voice, "Hey, I gotta get back, see you around?"
"Wait-"
He strode off, hands in his pockets, looking uncharacteristically ruffled. Dorothy and I glanced at each other and watched as Deanne stood there behind the rhododendrons. Knowing her, she was not happy and I half expected her to scream with rage then and there. She turned sharply on her shiny patent heel and stormed away, anger rippling off her in tidal waves.
We didn't speak for a while, then Dorothy broke the silence, "Well, that was intense."
"Hmmm...."
Both of us sat there, trying to process the information that we just got.
"I can't believe it." Dorothy muttered,
"I know, me too. I mean- just- Carter! Carter of all people! And someone like Deanne!"
Dorothy nodded, her expression haunted, "I always though it was Leo or something."
We sat there longer, frozen in our seats. Bee appeared in front of us, a frown on her face. We leapt to attention,
"What happened? Did you do it?"
"Yeah, but Deanne messed it all up. I was just walking down when she whipped Carter away, I did everything and told his friends. Hopefully they pass it on, or we're going to have to do it again, this time much more indirectly." Bee settled on the bench, "Why did she want him? Do you know-"
The whole story tumbled out of our mouths, our voices overlapping at different points. Bee's jaw went slack.
"No way.... You're kidding me."
I looked them, "Now this war is now Cerise v Lucia v Deanne."
We fell silent again.
"I doubt Deanne would win, it's sorta clear Carter doesn't like her." Dorothy said.
