Chapter Two: Draw The Line

Jane headed straight for the bar upon arrival a little more than half an hour later. She spotted Sam in an instant and watched from afar as he chatted to the barman. The intervening years had treated Sam well, Jane noted, he still looked as handsome as ever. Sam's voice soon reached her, "Janey!" he called, beckoning her over.

Jane approached as instructed and Sam rose to welcome her as a wide grin crossed his face. "It's so good to see you," he muttered before enfolding her in a warm embrace.

Jane reciprocated Sam's hug and held on for dear life. She couldn't remember the last time a guy and shown her so much affection, and it overwhelmed her. Tears, once again, sprang to her eyes and Jane sought to hide her sadness by burying her head into Sam's shoulder. "Hey, what's wrong, sweetheart?" Sam asked as he pulled away and gazed into Jane's tear-filled eyes.

She sniffed, "how long have you got?"

"All the time in the world for you," Sam replied, "I'll order drinks and then you can tell me everything."

Jane nodded, "I'll go grab a table,"

Sam grinned, reaching across to wipe away her tears; the gesture brought a smile to Jane's face, "that's better,"

She squeezed his arm, then made a beeline for a small, unoccupied table in the corner as Sam watched. "Same again for me and a brandy for my companion please," he said to the barman.

"Coming right up," he replied before fixing Sam a whiskey on the rocks, "she's way out of your league y'know," he adds, handing Sam a glass.

"What do you mean by that?" Sam spluttered in surprise.

"Look at her," he responded, gesturing towards the beautiful blonde, "she's gorgeous, a ten if ever there was one, you're only just a five."

Sam laughed, "you're only getting away with saying that because you're one of my best friends Damo,"

"I'm only teasing pal," Damo said, "what's the deal there then? You guys seem close."

Sam watched as Damo fixed up Jane's brandy; despite their long-standing friendship, he hadn't told Damo about Jane. He'd told his friend they'd been someone a long time ago who he'd been madly in love with but Damo didn't realise Jane was that girl. "I've known her since Freshman Year at High School... She was the one that got away."

Damo almost dropped Jane's brandy, such was his surprise at Sam's admission, "that's the famous Jane?" he questioned.

Sam nodded before casting a glance in Jane's direction, "yes,"

"What did you do?"

Sam turned back to Damo, "why do you always assume it's my fault?"

Damo shrugs, "experience," he responded, "it is your fault Lorraine divorced you."

"True," Sam conceded, "my heart was never in that marriage as you're well aware... it was always with someone else," he added as Damo passed over Jane's brandy. "I'll explain everything some other time, she needs me."

Damo nodded and returned to his duties as Sam approached the corner-table. "Thanks," Jane said as Sam handed over the large brandy.

Sam smiled before sitting down beside her, "tell me what's going on Janey,"
