Chapter Four: As Good As New
"Where are we going now?" Jane asked as they disembarked.
Jane's question suggested exasperation was coming to the fore. However, that wasn't the case, the secrecy thrilled her beyond words. "Times Square," Sam replied, "they'll be ringing in the New Year soon."
Before Sam steered Jane away, they took a few moments to thank the assembled staff for their efforts. Upon exchanging final pleasantries, they left the crew behind and headed for Times Square.
Just as Sam expected, Times Square was heaving, the excitement amongst the gathered crowd was palpable. As the time reached 11:59, the famous ball descended its flag-pole. An illuminated sign beneath counted down until New Year too. Jane's moment had arrived, she'd never get a better chance. "Sam!" she yelled over the hubbub.
He turned, "what is it Jane?"
"I need to tell you something,"
"Can't it wait?" Sam asked as the clock crept closer towards midnight.
Jane's frustration was telling, under normal circumstances, she wouldn't mind waiting. These weren't normal circumstances, she'd waited all evening for this moment and refused to wait any longer. "This has already waited long enough," she declared, raising her voice in sheer frustration. Sam turned back, giving his first love the undivided attention she desired. "What would you say if I told you I've broken up with Jake," she started, loud enough for Sam to hear. "Not just because he cheated, but because being here, spending time with you tonight has made me realise I'm still in love with you."
Sam blinked as Jane's declaration sunk in; both heard the countdown from 10 began amidst the silence. "Say that again," he demanded.
Sam knew what she'd said, but wished to hear the words again. Jane rolled her eyes in mock indignation, but complied. "I still fucking love you Sam Carmichael," she yelled so loudly, a few people nearby turned to identify the source of the commotion.
As Jane's words faded, the ball's lights went out, cheers erupted all around and a sea of confetti rose high into the air. Fireworks too were let off, their bright lights dazzling the otherwise still night sky. The bangs that accompanied them were only just discernible against the raucous cheers. Celebrating New Year however, was now the furthest thing from Sam's mind; he only had eyes for the woman who'd just declared her love to him. Sam leant towards Jane, cupping her face in his hands then gravitated forwards, finding her lips and kissing her for the first time in over thirty years. Jane didn't resist, she couldn't, and her lips soon parted against his. The passion in their kiss quickly reached fever-pitch as they released thirty years of pent-up hunger and desire in one mind-blowing kiss. Their attraction was irresistible and now the flames had been lit once more, they couldn't turn back. Jane pulled away moments later; her heart raced, she felt so alive in that moment. Jane brought her forehead to rest against Sam's, "take me some place else," she murmured.
He smiled, pulling back before stroking over her cheek, "shall I walk you back to the hotel?"
Jane shook her head, "somewhere else,"
Sam nodded, "I know just the place,"
Jane smiled, and that smile only widened as Sam clasped his hand in hers. Together, they manoeuvred through the crowds still milling about, the memory of their kiss still fresh in mind.
