It happened many years ago, the day that everything changed, the day the war began. It wasn’t a normal war, with people fighting over land, or money, or power. Most don’t actually know what happened that day, it just happened. Some believed it was the Apocalypse. It had been foretold in the Bible, the Apocalypse, when Lucifer would walk the earth. Great devastation would fall, but it would create a new paradise, where everyone would be happy and healthy. This was not the case.

It started with the virus. People turned into monsters, violent killing machines. They could rip out a child’s throat with their bare hands with not as much as a single shred of mercy. Entire cities would be abandoned in hours, with no clue of their whereabouts other than a single word written in blood anywhere in sight; Croatoan.

This is why the walls were built. It is human instinct to hide when faced with danger, and that is exactly what they did. Hide. The walls; almost impossible feats of human creation, were built to protect what was left of the human race. 30 feet thick and hundreds of miles long, they were completely cut off from the outside world. They were so impossible in fact, that some believed they were built by angels as a gift from God himself. The human race thrived inside of the walls for hundreds of years. Cities regrew to their former glory, and it seemed as though the life they created for themselves would sustain them forever. They all but forgot about the walls and what lay outside them. The Apocalypse became nothing more than a story, one that parents would tell their children at night before putting them to bed. Nobody really knew what was happening all around them. Nobody could have imagined what was yet to come.
