Sakura put down the dusty book she found as her brother put everything where it needed to be. She didn't know whose story she just read but she loved every single bit of it. She sniffled as she didn't realize that she had read the entire book, and then realized it wasn't a book, but a journal written in someone's handwriting before turning into Grandpa Scotty's handwriting. In that moment, she knew that it was his story; the story of his first love and the story of making a new start after a tragedy. She knew that it was a testimony of the ability to move on after being torn down.
"Tetsudatte kuremasen ka? (Can you please help me?)" Saiko whined, making his younger sister laugh. "Anata wa mojidōri jānaru o yonde 3-jikan soko ni suwatte imashita. (You literally sat there for 3 hours reading a journal.)"
"Shikashi, ojīchan no Scotty no zasshidesu, (It's Grandpa Scotty's journal, though)" she argued. "Ojīchan ga don'na hitodatta no ka shiritaku arimasen ka? (Don't you want to know what Grandpa Mitch was like?)"
"Watashi ga nozomu no wa, kaikon no tasukedesu, (What I want is help with unpacking)" he griped as their mother walked in.
"What did I say about Japanese when Grandpa Scotty and Grandpa Kian are around?" Kairi scolded, making the two sigh.
"She hasn't helped unpack at all!" Saiko sighed, putting books on his shelf. "She was too busy reading that journal that Grandpa Scotty kept after all these years."
"Well take a break," Kairi nodded, giving Sakura the look no child wants to see from their mother. "Dinner is almost finished, then you have the rest of the night off. Sakura will definitely do the rest since you've done so much."
"Sounds good to me," Saiko smirked at a pouting Sakura, her giving him a big fuck you in Japanese.
"Grandpa Scotty!" Saiko called out as soon as he saw his face, bowing like he was taught to. "It's really nice of you to come by the new place. It's good to get out of that hospital sometimes, yano?"
"I know, Saiko," Scott smiled, sitting down at the dinner table, Saiko beating Sakura to the seat next to him. "Now that you're very close to the hospital now, we could actually stop by a lot more often."
"I found your journal and read it," Sakura cut in, her brother sighing with annoyance. "Can you tell me what Grandpa Mitch was like?"
"He was a writer," Scott started with a smile. "His books were some of the best things I had ever read. He was smart and extremely creative. He was the sweetest and most selfless person you could possibly ever meet. He was just like your dad but a lot more fun and less job oriented."
"I heard that!" Coby yelled from the kitchen, making everyone laugh."You were meant to!" Scott called back, "Anyways, back to what I was saying.... He saved my life when we were younger. He found my journal, and it got me away from ever having to deal with my father as much anymore. It's strange, though. Neither of us would write in first person as if to one day publish our story. It may help someone out there, somewhere."
"I could always publish it for you," Coby called out once again. "I know it was always a dream of yours and Dad's to publish your story, and since I'm lead editor of a publishing company, I can give you the special treatment."
"You'd have to publish our journals from before then first, though," Scott shook his head. "We each have our other journals leading up to that moment, and a couple after. If you publish one, you have to publish them all."
"Well I will look into publishing them if you find them," Coby responded, bringing the pot of spaghetti in and putting it on the table.
"I already know where they are," Scott responded with a shrug. "I had them hidden away in a storage and recently put them in my office. I will bring them to you as soon as I can."
"Sounds like a plan to me," Coby finalized, sitting down at the table as well. "Now, who wants to eat?"
