"What if they hate me?"

Her mom rolled her eyes, setting a bowl of cereal in front of her just as her little brother Freddie tumbled down the stairs, his hair a mess from sleep and still in blue tee shirt and basketball shorts. "They won't hate you," her mother, Samantha, said. Bethany didn't have a bad bone in her body; how could someone hate her?

Beth sighed, fixing her hair behind her ear nervously. "I'm not the best at making friends," she said, as she spread some Nutella on her whole-wheat toast. "Beth, hun, you've had the same best friends since kindergarden. How would you even know if you're bad at making friends?"

"Well how do you know I'm not?" she bickered back, taking a bite of her toast. Her mom kept quiet, knowing that is was better just to leave it when she gets like this. "I'm just really nervous." Beth sighed out, knowing she was acting like a child.

"You should be," Freddie said, stealing her soggy frosted flakes. "I heard the last kid that went to Mockbridge that was from Hummel ended up being pelted with-"

"Thats enough Freddie." Sam said, ruffling his hair and putting a glass of chocolate milk in front of him.

"Nah, I'm just kidding, Beth. People are gonna like you, especially the boys because you have shiny hair and all the boys in my class like Serena Gasket because she has shiny hair." he said, talking a sip of his milk.

"Thanks, Fred." she smiled, taking a bite of her toast again. She suddenly wished she was like Freddie, a 10 year old kid whose biggest worries were who had a crush on who and if that weird kid still picked his nose and then ate it.

"I remember when you were Freddie's age, Beth. Riding the ferry was your favorite part of going to school. You tried to purposely fail 5th grade so you would have to stay in elementary school."

You see, Hummel Beach Island was a unique town. It was often nicknamed 'The Island City'. It was a small little town right off the coast of South Carolina. Their town was the only thing on the tiny piece of land, which can admittedly get a bit isolating, but Beth still loved it to death. To get to the mainland you have to take a 10 minute ferry, which took you to Mockbridge Port.

You see Hummel may be small, but it had a reputation of being very wealthy, which Beth thought was a bit exaggerated. Yes, her family was well off, but they weren't millionaires. They were in the upper-middle class, like a lot of other people in Hummel, except for couple super rich families.

Starting today, Beth now had to ride the ferry with her little brother to school. She'd never had to do that before. She used to go to St. Gabes (the private school in Hummel that had closed down because it was too small) but now things were changing. Their mom used to go with Freddie on the ferry, but now that Beth was available, she'd have to do it from then on. Beth was somewhat excited for the new school and having to make new friends, but of course she was nervous. It was always nerve wracking on the first day.

Some twenty minutes later, the pair was ready to go. Beth wasn't sure if she was dressed appropriately because, having gone to private school since sixth grade, she wore a uniform. Now that she was going to public school and free to wear what she wanted. Her sheer white lace top with a black bow type thing at the collar, and this flannel purple skirt her friend Autumn got her from TopShop for her birthday. She laced up her all black vans, and looked at herself in the mirror.

Yes, even she knew she might be overdoing it just a tad, but this is how Beth was. She didn't like going out of her comfort zone.

She grabbed a hair tie and styled her hair in a half up-half down fashion, like she had been wearing her hair almost everyday since freshman year, curling the ends a bit. It wasn't like there weren't days where she just wanted to put her hair in a messy bun, but she had super thick and heavy hair. It got to the point where if she wore it up for too long she got super bad headaches. She also couldn't stand her hair in her face, so the hair style seemed to be a happy medium for her.
