Ricks P.O.V.

1 month later

Rick brushed his hand over the little girls sandy hair. Carl resting his head on his fathers lap. Lori was on the couch by the window, her soft snores could be heard from across the room. He looked down at his little boy, he was grateful for everything Hershel and his family had done for them all despite the loss of one of their own, Otis. Shane had told them, the walkers got to him and there was nothing he could do. It was too late. Shane had no choice but to leave with the medical equipment which would give the two children a fighting chance. Carl pulled through surgery, thankfully. However, Indigo never woke up. Hershel had said that she had fallen into some sort of coma and it was only a matter of time. He was right about one thing, there was nothing they could do but wait. The chances of her waking up were slim but Rick believed she was still in there. She was a fighter, he knew that ever since he found the blue eyed eight year old in an abandoned car in the woods.

Rick doubted every person who didn't think she would wake up. As the days passed, he began losing hope. His heart broke at the sight of the small girl in the bed, this world had broke her.

Daryl had gone out almost every day to find Sophia and almost every day he came back without her. His eyes were always filled with frustration and worry. Rick always watched conflicted by his own emotions of leaving the kids by themselves that day. He wanted so bad to see that little girl come through the door with Daryl, to reunite Carol with her daughter. It just never happened. Rick blamed himself every day for what walked out of the barn that following day. He would never be able to disregard the vivid image of the lifelessness in Sophia's eyes as she stumbled towards them snapping her jaws violently.

What really killed him was the piercing cries of her mother as Daryl held her back. Carol was devastated at the sight of her little girl and he was to blame. He should have never left them and he did, and this was the price to pay. A life for a life. He remembered the cock of his gun and the sound of the very lost shot. He had shot her directly through her head. She wasn't the only loss, they had also lost Dale. He had been attacked by a walker, ripped open in the fields. They had lost too many and Rick wasn't about too add Indi to the list. She would make it and he would do everything he could to make that happen.
