Leila was sitting in the second period. Her friend Maya was sitting next to her and telling her about a cat she wants to adopt. Leila was working on her assignment, making a holiday card for patients in the hospital.

The card had a pop-up firework and Christmas lights with a Christmas tree. It had a message inside and drawing on the back. On the front, it had 2 pop-up fireworks and snowflakes. The front said, "The Most Wonderful Time of The Year!" The card was sent to the hospital for a lucky kid to enjoy.

      Days later...

Leila received a letter from her art teacher. She figured it was for another field trip because she had gone on every single trip offered. She sat down and opened it. It was a holiday card from someone named Nathan. The letter read:

Happy holidays! I received your holiday card and I wanted to write back because you need to know how amazing your drawing was on the back. Your pop-ups were out of this world, as well. I like how you didn't appeal to just Christmas, you were conscious not to offend who got your card because you are not sure what people celebrate. That was nice of you. I'm Nathan, I celebrate Christmas, btw.

Leila was amazed that Nathan acknowledged her holiday card, especially because she didn't expect to be recognized for making a nice gesture toward someone who isn't as fortunate as her. After school, Leila decided to write a letter to Nathan acknowledging his kind gesture of taking his time to write her a letter.

Hi Nathan! Thanks for the card acknowledging mine, I wasn't expecting to get one back. I wanted to wish someone a happy holiday that is less fortunate than I am. My teacher said it would be sent to the hospital for cancer patients. I don't want to overstep my boundaries, but are you a cancer patient? If you are, what kind of cancer? I have a lot of family members who have had cancer and I'm curious about it. Please write back. -Leila

Leila gave her letter to her art teacher the next day and it was sent to Nathan. Leila wondered about Nathan for the rest of the school day. She was curious about him. She had a feeling that they would be good friends.
