It was an ascend alright. Just about as much as it was a jungle...maybe even a swamp, so i just marveled at this sanctuary. Plants, flowers, sprouts, vines, even moss created this small boy's living quarters. They seemed to grow from the walls themselves and yet (if you had been staring as long as i had) you could see hundreds of pots, mugs bowls, a broken lava lamp, a fish bowl? It seemed any sort of container became a forever family for these assorted plants. "you have so many," i said, aghast, but who was i talking to? where on earth was he? i jumped at the feel of his finger lightly tapping my shoulder again.
"s-sorry Trixie but, do you like them?" he said, a slight blush illuminating his features in the dank old attic
"how did you get so many?" avoiding his question, of course i loved it, my father had a green house and i had never felt so close to him than now, i used to talk to the flowers like they were my brothers and sisters for hours on end. The memory hurt me now, as if it had a hand and squeezed me i stopped at the thought that i couldn't save my brothers and sisters.
"I pick up seeds that i can" he was rubbing the back of his neck, a nervous tick. Then it hit me it wasn't drugs he took from the local nut in the high school. Those muddy krispy kreme bags were plants,
"they were plants!" he looked at me shocked as if i shot a flare gun in his room. "uh, sorry i thought they were..uh"
"drugs? i know its okay Trixie" silence made its presence known and stood between us, but it felt okay. This place really was a sanctuary, it almost felt like a church, welcoming and radiant? i didn't know this feeling but i was hypnotized by its comfort. I sat with the hippie in the attic as long as i could. Apparently that was equivalent to three and a half hours.
"I know what you need up here Oliver,"
"and that is?" he asked curiously.
"snap dragons, they talk back..."
"huh?"
"ill make you a deal, I'll show you how talk to the snapdragons, if you uh...if i can go back to the bonfire..." i couldn't keep eye contact with him at the deals proclamation but he was grinning wildly.
"Fair trade Trixie, deal." i extended my hand and he stared for a moment before shaking. I had no idea what i just got myself into but i was going to get new brothers and sisters. And a new scare.
