Chapter 1

"Shea, I can't believe this!" I reply, tears of joy and sadness flowing from my chocolate brown eyes.

"What can't you believe, April?" He asks, confused. I take a deep breath, and think about what to say. This is the biggest thing I can ever do, and I'm going against my best friend, I think to myself. How can this happen?

"Shea," I answer, nervously. "I'm competing against Kelly, in a competition that may make or break my music career. Kelly already said it didn't matter whether or not either of us won. As long as we stay friends in the end."

"That's pretty cool." He replies. "I support the both of you. I hope you know that. In fact, I'm going to be in the front row of the audience, on the day of the competition." I take a glance at him, in astonishment.

"You are?" I ponder.

"Yeah. I wanted to be there for the both of you, and I had a feeling you wanted me in the front row- you know, because of your stage fright- so, I decided to negotiate with the judges, since I didn't have a ticket, and they let me go to the front row, for free. They even gave me a backstage pass. If you want, I could use that pass during your performance." I look down at my chocolate winter boots, and smile.

"I'd love that." The blacktop slowly becomes a blanket of snow, as we head inside for our last day of school, before winter break.

As we walk, I feel a hand on my shoulder. I turn around, anxiously.

"April, it's okay," Shea replies. "It's only me. You seem a bit nervous for today." I look down, feeling the shakiness all around my body. My stage fright's kicking in, I think. I can feel it.

"Shea, you know me so well." I exclaim. "I'm terrified about today." My voice shakes with every word. Shea looks down, noticing my hands shaking.

"Just relax, April. You'll do great. I know you will." He answers. His ice blue eyes glisten in the fluorescent lighting of our school. We slowly make it to our lockers.

"Shea, what if I pass out?" I ask, nervously. I open up my locker, and set my Hackettstown Tigers backpack down on the floor, beside it.

"If you pass out, I'll be there. Plus, I'll probably be begging the judges to give you another chance." He looks at me, compassion overflowing in his eyes. "I know you can do it, April." I grab my binders for 1st through 5th period, take off my purple coat, revealing a snow white dress. My backpack falls, and my black Lei heels spill out, along with my blue makeup bag, and my songbook. Slipping out of my boots, I get a grip on reality for a quick second. Just one second more, I think to myself. All I need is one second more.

"Thanks, Shea." I reply. "I'll talk to you later." I slip on my heels, grab my books, makeup bag, and songbook, and head to homeroom.
