"Lexi?... Lexi? Hello... anyone there?" my english teacher, Mrs. Turner, called, waving her hands in front of my face, snapping me out of my day dream.

"Sorry what?"

"What is the symbolism in the book?"

"There is none? It's about a tragic love story, not about a symphony?"

People around me began snickering, while others muttered, "loser," under their breath.

"Miss Adams. I will see you at detention again young lady," Mrs. Turner spoke, handing me a yellow slip.

"Yes ma'am"

"Now pay attention," she spoke before going back to talking about symbolism in the book.

It's not that I deliberately try to be disrespectful, it's just that I struggle with staying focused on one one thing for long periods of time, especially when I don't understand it. It's like my brain goes into shut off mode and I just tune everything out. So, to cover it up, I try and be funny about things, and well you know how that just played out.

In case you haven't figured it out already, I'm Lexi Adams. I'm sixteen and live with my brother Josh and his boyfriend, Nate. My parents passed away when I was 12 and my brother was 16. We lived with my grandmother for a while, but unfortunately she became very ill and passed away a couple years later. Josh had just turned 18, so I was placed under his care unless I wanted to live with my crazy Aunt Nancy, which I didn't. He had just started seeing someone, who he failed to mention was a guy. I had to find out the hard way. Yeah, seeing your seemingly straight brother making out with another guy isn't the most forgettable scene. Anyway, we talked it over and set some ground rules to avoid anymore situations like that. About a year later, they decided to move in together and everything's all good. I've never seen anything wrong with my brother being gay, or him and Nate living together. Nate's awesome, pretty laid back and chill, not to mention smokin' hot. He balances out my brother, who tends to be more uptight and responsible, perfectly. The two keep each other in line and are definitely meant for each other.

Anyway, back to the story. I have ADD, attention deficit disorder, which is just a fancy way of saying I have a shorter attention span than the average human being. I've struggled with it for majority of my school years, but it doesn't impact my day to day life significantly. My grades slack off a bit every now and then, but I manage to keep it together, or so I thought I did...

At lunch, I went to detention and sat down and doodled as usual. Eventually that doodling lead to falling asleep, which lead to a very unpleasant awakening by Mrs.Turner.

"Lexi Adams! Do you want another detention?"

"No ma'am. Sorry I swear I didn't mean to."

She let out a sigh before continuing, "Just come by my classroom after school. I think I might have a solution for all of this."

With that, detention ended, and I went back to my boring, uneventful day.

After school, I went back to Mrs. Turner's room and entered, seeing none other than Tyler Stevens standing there as well.

"What the hell are you doing here Stevens?"

"I could ask you the same question Adams."

"Mrs. Turner called me in."

"Same. Gotta help some dumbass failing every class."

"Hey! For all you know, I could very well be that dumbass."

"Whatever."

Mrs. Turner came in before our little conversation could go any further.

"Miss Adams. Mr.Stevens. I see you two have already met. You two will be working together."
