chapter sixteen
MONTY?
"rather be the hunters than the prey."Evelynn peered out over the surrounding silent, green forest, grip tightening on the rifle in her hand, bouncing on her heels in nervousness.
The Grounders were definitely going to retaliate from the bridge, it was just a matter of when.
That was the fear that had scared many Gunners into abandoning their post in fear of their own lives.
Nobody could blame them, really. They stood above the walls, completely exposed and vulnerable. When the Grounders attacked, they would be the first to go.
But someone had to do it.
"Hey, crazy! What the hell are you doing up there?"
Evelynn swung her head around to look over her shoulder, hair whipping her back, "I'm watching for Grounders." A playful smile appeared on her face as she teased him, mocking his question, "What the hell are you doing down there?"
"Very funny." Bellamy squinted his eyes as he looked up at her, "Who made you a Gunner?" She licked her lips, not answering the question, "And where did you get the rifle?"
"I may have stolen it. A little."
"Mhm." Bellamy pulled his lips into a line, "Okay, come down."
Evelynn's brows clenched in confusion, "No."
"Evelynn, this isn't funny. Come on." Bellamy waved his hand, signaling for her to come down.
Evelynn pursed her lips, "I'm not trying to be funny." Bellamy did not seem amused, his playful demeanor gone. Evelynn sighed, swinging the rifle over her shoulder, "Bellamy, you know I'm a good shot. You taught me. Let me be useful around here."
They stood silently, staring at each other creating a wordless conversation.
"Fire! There's a fire!"
Finally on the same page, Bellamy and Evelynn shared a look of panic, then looked towards the sight of the sound.
Bellamy didn't waste another second before running towards the smokehouse that was now completely consumed in flames. Evelynn was quick to follow, jumping down from her post and sprinting towards the fire.
The blazing heat and crackling wood seared the air. Bellamy was pulling Octavia away from the smoke as she coughed, Murphy beside them, ash covering his face. As soon as he seemed to regain his bearings, his emotions shifted to anger.
