"Sans! Sans!" Papyrus strolled through the underworld, cupping his hands around his mouth and calling for his brother. He had said he would stay here to watch the souls, so where was he? He must have stopped for a nap somewhere, right? That lazybones.
"Sans!"
"What's up, Papyrus?"
The younger death god heard his brother's voice behind him and let out a sigh of relief. "There you are, brother." He turned around to give a lecture about keeping promises but was too stunned to go through with it. Standing behind his brother was another skeleton that looked astonishingly similar to him, only he was wearing white and red and was terribly injured.
"Sans, who is this? A lesser god? I haven't seen him before..." Papyrus trailed off as the strangest sensation came to him. This person... is a mortal? But he's a skeleton like us!
"This is Geno. I felt him teetering on the edge of death in a dying world and decided to go and help him out, but it turns out he won't die."
"An immortal mortal?" Papyrus tilted his head in utter confusion.
"Something like that, I guess. As long as we don't put some real effort into it." Reaper shrugged. "Anyway, since his world was about to be destroyed and I couldn't harvest his soul, I invited him here."
"Sans..." Papyrus looked on unsurely. "While I know you had good intentions, I'm not so sure this is a good idea."
"Oh come on, bro. Look at this." Reaper wrapped his arm around Geno's shoulder and gave his brother a wide smile. "There's someone around besides just the two of us that we can play around with without worrying about accidentally killing them."
"Well," Papyrus smiled softly, "it does get a little lonely here sometimes." He looked at Geno warmly. "I won't force you to stay here if you do not wish to, mortal, but you are welcome to stay."
Geno sighed as this world's Papyrus went off to tend to the souls in the underworld. It felt so complicated seeing him like this. Honestly, he didn't know if he could face someone who looked and acted so much like his brother right now. Because I just killed my brother along with the rest of our world. But I had no choice.
"Something eating you, Geno?" his grim-reaper-esque counterpart asked knowingly.
"It hurts seeing him. But..." Geno managed to smile, "he seems so calm. It's weird seeing him less than the most energetic creature around, but at least he doesn't look like he's suffering."
Reaper hummed and watched his brother's back, seeing him give encouraging words to a sad soul. "He doesn't like our job any more than I do, but he at least finds some purpose in it."
"Your job?" Geno echoed.
"You know already, don't you?" Reaper chuckled. "Us two brothers are the gods of death. The god of magic created us when the older gods decided the world was growing too stagnant. In other words, our entire reason for existing is to take lives. Not the most motivating line of work to be in, huh?"
"I guess not." Geno watched the other god of death in the distance and unconsciously clutched his scarf. "I can't imagine my brother killing anyone. Does yours?"
Reaper lifted his legs up and sat cross-legged in the air. "Papyrus is painless death. He does reap people when their time comes, but they don't suffer at all. I on the other hand," he twirled his scythe and chuckled, "Well, you felt it yourself for a minute there, didn't you?"
Geno clutched his sternum and nodded and Reaper put his scythe away. "Good people, people who were kind and are ready to move on, deserve for Papyrus to take them away. Bad and stubborn people get me. It doesn't matter if they're not ready; I drag them here whether they want to come or not." Reaper sighed. "And both of us together take care of the souls here in the underworld, helping them make peace with their lives before they cross the river and return to the goddess of life."
Geno watched the god of death as he started to doze in mid-air. Suspicions leaked into his voice. "Why did you really bring me here, Reaper? Am I a bad soul that you're trying to beat back into shape? Do you want me to make peace and cross this river you mentioned?"
Reaper raised a bony brow and tipped his head. "No, I didn't have anything like that in mind. I really was just lonely and wanted some company. Maybe it's sad that I had to turn to an alternate version of myself to get it, but beggars can't be choosers." He held up a skeletal hand demonstratively. "In case I didn't make it clear enough, Papyrus and I kill everything we touch whether we want to or not. That's not a trait that makes people want to hang out with you."
Geno sighed and crossed his arms. "Fine. I'll hang out for a few days, but if I don't enjoy it make sure and kill me like you promised."
"Sure thing, pal."
