The Witch & The Werewolf

Ch. 18

[The Witch]

Death happens every day, whether you like it or not. It doesn't ask if you are ready to leave your loved ones, it simply decides when your time is for you. You don't have a choice, there is nothing you can do to stop it, most of the time. I should have realized that something was off, I should have known that this wasn't Farron. But I guess I was so distracted that my mind wasn't processing anything the way it normally would. Liz was alive but my parents and Farron's mom are dead, that was all I could think about.

From the corner of my eye I saw the Farron look alike stab Deccan in the stomach with a blade, that no one had realized he had, before slowly making his way towards Liz and I. The look in his eyes should have scared me, I should have been terrified of the predatory glint, right? Well maybe you should tell my mind that, I had only moments to process what was happening before my hands shot out and he was blasted back into the tree from the force of the water I controlled. If he were any normal person it would have knocked him unconscious, but he isn't normal, seconds after he hit the tree his body shifted, the air around him shimmering and he turned into a wolf.

"Dani, I think maybe we should run." Liz whispered in my ear, pulling me backwards away from the advancing wolf. Its gaze switched back and forth between us slowly, a calculating look in its black eyes. "Dani..."

The wolf's head cocked to the side, its back legs hunching a second before it lunged.

[The Werewolf]

The chains wouldn't move, they cut into my skin every time I tried to slip from them. My feet were barely touching the ground and the urge to shift was overwhelming my mind. Only one thought was swirling, to get out and kill him. Once I got out of here I would kill him, simply for thinking about harming my mate. I didn't care if the guilt would eat me alive, I didn't care if Daniella was afraid of me after this, nothing else mattered but spilling his blood. He'd said my mother had chosen his fate and he's chosen his. He wouldn't live to see the day he wishes for, I will kill him if it is the last thing I do.

The huge wooden door slammed open, a young girl in a black cloak walked into the room, stopping barely a foot away from me. She didn't look up, didn't react to being so close to me when I was snarling like a rabid animal. She only held up one hand and my mouth shut, my mind shutdown, the murderous thoughts halting. I realized then that she wasn't a Were, but I couldn't sense what she was, or how she had gotten past my father's guards blocking the door she had walked into.

She looked up at me, her purple eyes glowing in the darkness, shining with an amusement that pissed me off to no end. "Now, are you going to stop growling at me or do I need to castrate you?" I blinked at her, sensing the truth of her words. I kept quiet waiting for her to continue. "Damn, you know all you mutts look the same? Though you have an innocence about you that's startling."

"Why are you here?" The words barely made it past my lips, because of the force of her power. It was shocking to me that someone so small could leave me barely able to speak. She wasn't a Witch, she was nothing I had ever seen before and that was surprising. As the future king I had met every creature in my father's kingdom at least once before, so where was she from?

"Well, I'm here to help you silly." Her voice was oddly childish, contrasting the adult way she held herself, the amount of power she so obviously held. "Unless you don't want my help. Cause I can always leave, but then my brother would be upset if he found out that I didn't." She sighed, blowing her hair from out of her face. "Deccan's always had a hero complex and it always ended up getting us both into trouble."

"Who the hell is Deccan? And why would you help me?" She sighed and stared at me like I was stupid. She looked annoyed that I was missing something but I couldn't find it in me to care. I've been chained up in this shithole for who knows how long, I couldn't care less about this little girl's problems. "Who are you, anyway?"
