Something must be in the water

Mack

Six months after Andrew came along, everyone was popping up pregnant. There must be something in the water, and they all must drink it, including Ruth.

Paige was trying to be happy for her friends, but to hear they were expecting, she wasn't. It made her feel inadequate. She was far from inadequate. The doctors saying it was one of those things each time she miscarried was complete bullshit.

I'm tired of them not giving us any answers and definitely tired of Paige feeling like it was all her fault. I took her to a specialist. We needed answers.

The Doctor ran tests and looked at how she had miscarried to figure out what was going on. Finally, he sat us down and explained things.

"From what I see, Paige's body rejects anything foreign in her body. Considering a fetus is a foreign object, her body will expel it," he explained.

"Are you saying she will only continue to reject a pregnancy?" I asked him.

"Without help? Yes. With help? No," the Doctor advised us.

We looked at him, a bit confused.

"Mr. Bennett, we are going to start your wife on hormone therapy, then she will need to take it completely easy. Your wife is at high risk. We'll watch her, but if you want to have a baby, then you need to follow my instructions," he advised.

"Anything, Doctor, we want a baby," I pleaded with him as Paige looked hopeful.

"Then let's get started," he suggested as we agreed.

Paige started hormone therapy. The Doctor told her to continue them along with trying to get pregnant. The minute she was expecting, then the Doctor would check her.

We hoped this would be a success. God, I hope so because I couldn't watch her go through it again.

A couple of months after taking hormone therapy, we found out she was a month pregnant. They wait until the mother is eight weeks along, but the Doctor didn't want to take any chances with experiences. I definitely didn't want to take any chances.

As of now, Paige was off from work until after the baby came. She was not to do anything and take it easy-no stress, which were the Doctor's orders.

We also held off buying baby items. Figured we didn't need a reminder in case something happened.

The girls stop by to see her. Having six pregnant women in one apartment was a sight. I don't think you realize how much space it limits when you have women growing. At some point, we would need to find a more prominent place. First, we needed to get past the month that Paige usually miscarried.

I know most people would say it's okay, but when you've been through it a few times, you take no chances and worry a lot. That has softened me a lot. All I wanted was Paige to deliver a baby with no issues.

I doted on her while she took it easy, and of course, we watched tv shows. We had to kill the boredom.

As we caught up with Charmed, I heard her say, "Ooh."

I turned as she propped herself up and placed her hand on her belly.

"You okay? Is it the baby?" I asked.

"The baby kicked," she said, confused. I looked at her as she held her hand on her belly, then she said, "Ooh."

I reached over and placed my hand on her belly, then I felt a kick. My facial expression changed to surprise as she looked at me. Then it happened again.

Kick!

I couldn't help but laugh and get excited. We sat there as the baby started kicking up a storm while we enjoyed feeling the kicks. Most guys would be like meh, but for me, this was everything.

Even when we heard the heartbeat for the first time and saw the baby on the screen. You never realize it's these little moments that mean the most until they're taken from you. Every time we had them ripped from us. It was like God looked down and said, "Ha! Fool you."

All these moments were important to us.

While everyone found out what they were having, we didn't. We didn't want to jinx it. You can call us superstitious, but we'll wait. We also didn't buy any baby stuff. It was the same reasoning. We didn't want to get ahead of ourselves. We were in a holding pattern as Paige progressed in her pregnancy.

She was around seven months when we heard a knock at our door. I ordered her to stay put when she tried to get up and went to answer the door. I found my brother-in-law standing there.

"What brings you to our neck of the woods, Isador?" I asked him.

"I have something for you and Paige," he said as he walked past me and inside.

"Sure, come on in," I sighed as I closed the door.

He walked over and took a seat in a chair. I walked back over to the couch, taking a seat next to Paige.

"What's going on, Isador?" She asked him a bit worried.

"Paige, I got a job offer overseas. They offered me more money, and I can take my family with me," he explained as she looked at him, getting upset. I reached over and placed my hand on hers.

"Remember Paige, stress isn't good for the baby," I reminded her, trying to keep her calm.

She looked at me and took a deep breath.

"You're right," she said to me. She turned back to her brother, "So, you're leaving?"

"Yeah, but the thing is, I decided that you need a bigger place, so I signed over my house to you and Mack," he said, surprising us.

"Isador," she said.

"Paige, I know you don't want to take it. I didn't want to go through selling a house, plus mom and dad wanted me to take care of you," he reasoned.

Paige started crying as we both comforted her. The baby kicked up a storm. The three of us started laughing. I guess the baby is happy.

Isador stayed for a while, and before he left, he handed Paige and me the paperwork. We will move after the baby comes. I didn't want Paige to deal with the stress of moving. Not until our little bundle of joy made their arrival. We came this far. We need a little more time. Hang in there, kid. We need you as much as you need us.
