jae walked out of the building, scanning the area for somewhere to sit.

he did not want to sit by himself on the first day. his plan was to just spot a group and sit with them. he didn't care if they knew him or not, he needed to make some friends anyway.

"okay", jae prepared himself as he walked over to a group of strangers. he purposefully cleared his throat before he sat down so attention would be drawn toward him. as he descended, he stretched his neck to prepare himself one more time, however, something caught his eye.

sungjin

"yooooo," jae thought, "i'm bailing on these people. let's get it sungjin and company."

before jae could even place his butt on the seat he gave up on making new friends. in the blink of an eye, jae had stood back up and walked away from where he was— without saying a word.

he caught up to sungjin and the two people he was walking with. the four of them found a place to sit under the shade of a tree and began to eat.

"okay time for more introductions," sungjin began to speak. "jae," sungjin pointed at him then moved his aim to point at the other boy, "wonpil." jae waved, fingertips already coved in hot cheeto dust, and wonpil smiled back at him.

"and this is eunhae," sungjin looked towards the girl sitting with them underneath the tree, "she's new here as well."

the two new students exchanged a pair of friendly smiles. jae was happy that he wasn't the only one who sought asylum in sungjin.

"so eunhae, where are you from?" sungjin tried to initiate a conversation so they wouldn't be sitting in silence all lunch.

"i'm from the u.s.," eunhae stated with her hand in front of her mouth, terrified that there might be a piece of food stuck in her teeth.

jae's posture straightened and his eyes widened. "yo," he said automatically switching languages. "i am, too! what state did you live in? i'm from cali."

"florida."

"cool. did you live in disney?"

"no, did you?"

"touché," jae nodded as sungjin and wonpil spoke amongst themselves, probably saying something about not understanding. "now i have another person to speak english with," jae sighed happily.

"yeah," eunhae said, "I've probably only said 30 words in korean all day and i'm worn out."

"mood."
