Finally reaching my class in just the nick of time before the bell rang, I saw Linaya. Spotting me she waved her hand, beckoning me over.
"Hey, are you ok? You seem pretty out of breath," she said with a slight smile and a raise of her brow. "Oh, it's nothing. I just ran right over before I got late. I wanna make a good first impression is all," I was somewhat telling the truth.
"Why are you out of breath?" Looking at her I saw her cheeks had a slight tint to them and she had sweat beading around her hair line. "Girl, my mean ass pe teacher really tried it. He made us run for 15 minutes straight without a break," she used the sleeve of her shirt to wipe her sweat.
"Damn, hopefully my pe class isn't the same. I don't exactly do activities that require a lot of physical exertion," I say in a matter of fact tone.
She laughed at this, "As long as you don't have Mr. Collins, you're good,"
At the sound of someone clearing their throat, Linaya and I looked up. "Girls, are you done talking?"
Feeling the gazes of other students shift towards us makes me more aware of my surroundings.
Linaya rolls her eyes and slouches in her chair but remains quiet.
The rest of class was uneventful and boring. Packing my things up a minute before the bell rang linaya leaned over and whispered, "We have lunch next and I'm guessing you don't really know anyone here. If you want, you can come and sit with me and my friends,"
Feeling grateful for her kind gesture, I smiled at her. "Thank you, but I'll have to decline. I wanna go explore a little," I said as I rose from my seat.
"Oh, ok then. The offer still stands if you change your mind," she pushed her curls out of her eyes and got out of her seat we well.
The bell rang singling the official end of class. I waved bye and began walking in the opposite direction of the hurd of students making their way to lunch.
I walked out of the building into the courtyard. There were stone pillars framing the main courtyard. The center had hills of fresh green grass and trees with white bark. Lush bushes adorned with pink and white flowers were neatly planted in horizontal rows.
I walked away from the shade the building was providing and into the sunlight. I immediately felt my face and body being warmed up. I wanted to walk towards the serene scene of the grass and trees but something caught my eye. A sign clearly saying "Stay off the grass" was firmly planted near a bench. But that's not what put me off. Under a giant tree further away from the others was a person.
They were laying flat on their back with their arms crossed behind their head. From their massive size and build I could tell they were male. From where I was standing I couldn't distinguish them that well from the large tree's shadow.
On any other occasion I would leave them alone and continue on minding my business but something made me go to them. Before I knew it I was already walking in their direction. The closer I got the more quiet my footsteps became. When I was right in front of the tree I felt a suffocating pressure pushing against my chest.
All I had to do now was walk around the tree.
Taking a deep breath I carefully peered around to only to see no one.
What the- where did they go?
