Adam slunk into the pew next to me. His shoulders were heavy with grief and his hair was longer than normal. His freshly shaved face was red lined and his eyes rimmed with sadness.

"Adam." I tried to speak but words failed me. Beginning to stand, I felt a hand wrap around my arm.

"Y/n. No. Just please. I lost one person I love, I can't lose another." He thread his fingers through mine.

I tried to pull my hand away, but his hand held me firmly. "Adam. Please. Joanna wouldn't have wanted you to be so sad."

"Yet you are." He sadly looked me in my eyes.

"Why didn't she tell me?" I let my eyes fill.

"Because she knew you would spend money to try and save her. She knew." He slid his hand on mine. "Y/n, she knew. She knew I loved you and not her. She knew why I couldn't stand to be home. She knew the instant I came home from four months traveling with you. She knew. And she spent her last moments giving us her blessing."

"Why?" I cried. Straightening I looked into the crowd. Friends. Family. Our friends. Watching. Waiting.

"Y/n, I don't know. I just know I need you." His voice dropped.

"If we do this, we can't let the public know right away, or they will know something is up." I smiled at him. "And I need to mourn. She was like my sister."

"I know. And I can wait." He squeezed my hand and his Step-father walked to the pulpit. His hands remained in mine as his step father begins his service.

After the two hours of memories, Adam and I stood and walked to the back of the room. His hand clasped behind his back, attempting to not touch me.

I smiled a bitter smile and pushed into the double doors. My tight black dress clung to me as I tried to run in my heels.

"Y/N!" Adam ran after me.

I just continued my walk. I opened the door to my Cadillac and he stopped next to me. "Adam, I can't."

"I know." He held me as I cried. "I watched her die." His shoulders sank and I buried my head into his chest. "But she would want us to be strong and to be happy."

"I know." I sniffed. "I'm gonna try."

"That's my girl." He smiled sadly and we walked back to the reception room.
