"Up! Both of you!" a voice yelled into your room as it banged on your door. You heard some curses and groans from Maurine as you also vocally complained. You must have slept in. "The prince wants both of you in his room, Now!" she shouted before stomping away. The two of you got up and stretched your aching backs before getting ready for the day."Goddamn..." you muttered. "There's no way we woke up that late."
"I know," Maurine agreed as she slipped on her stockings. "Whatever happened with the prince last night anyway?"
"Oh, it was nothing," you fibbed. "He just wanted to see how I was adjusting." That wasn't completely false, at least. You didn't want to admit that he gave you food or that he fed it to you or that you had unfortunately tasted the tips of his fingers. You blushed at the thought. The whole thing was indecent. At least the pastry was delicious...
The two of you were in the Prince's room in no time. He looked happy to see you both which was a little strange. You were just maids. He requested that the two of you polished his chess board, and this ended up taking a while. Each piece needed treating and they were all intricate which meant more nooks and crannies for dust to get trapped in. At least the two of you were allowed to sit. The prince made idle talk with the two of you. It was like last night never happened. You were thankful for that.
"Now, set up the board. You know how right?" The prince asked from the couch. You weren't sure why he was patronizing you. You told him last night you knew how to play. You nodded to confirm that yes, you could do it. Maurine looked to you with an arched brow.
"Can you play, (y/n)?" she whispered. You just nodded. You didn't feel like having small talk that involved any praise to you right now. Setting the pieces in the right order, you stood back to admire your work. The board and the pieces were absolutely glittering, and you loved it.
"You two are a little late today, so after your lunch please come back in here," the prince dismissed you both with a wave. That was gracious of him. You had seen maids forced to skip lunch based on the whims of noble people. You really did consider yourself lucky to work under the prince and the princess.
The two of you sat at the table you usually sat at. Lunch wasn't big today, just some ham and some bread. You were thankful anyway. Food is a blessing. Maurine and you chatted between bites—you both got along pretty well. "Do you hope we work with the Princess today?" she spoke with a smirk.
"Shut up!" you elbowed her, "I hardly know her. And I have nothing to tease you with!" you pouted at the unfairness.
"Well, I'm sure you'll find something to tease me about," Maurine laughed. "You don't have to be so afraid of a harmless little crush, everyone has them."
"Oh? Then who do you fancy?"
"Not the point!" Maurine's face reddened. "But let's just say I have a bit more of a chance than you."
You gaped at this, "What! Tell me who it is Maurine!"
She shook her head as you pushed her to reveal more to you. It was time to go back to the prince's room and continue cleaning, but you could tease and walk. "Can I at least have a hint?"
"You already have one! He's of lower rank than royalty. But fine, another—It's someone that the King trusts," she huffed before knocking on the prince's door. Someone the King trusts, huh? Well, that knocks out a few people... You'd have to think about it later. When you entered the room, you gasped. It was a mess—nothing like how you left it! Sheets were strewn everywhere, pillows upturned, a chair was tossed even! The chess board—good god, the chess board! It was knocked over with pieces everywhere. You had to freeze your rage. What did Prince Ashe do in your thirty-minute lunch break? He didn't look put together either—his hair was disheveled, His trousers were hastily pulled up and his shirt was open. You were a bit dazed. His toned chest was exposed, and he breathed somewhat heavily. Why did he let you two in without dressing properly? You looked at Maurine who didn't seem fazed in any way whatsoever. She just sighed and began to pick up the pieces. You numbly followed suit.
