Mia couldn't pry her eyes from her own reflection.

She looked absolutely ridiculous. Tempted to rip the clingy garment off of her body and throw it back into the lamented gift bag dropped off by no other than her bestie Beverley, her upper lip curled in utter disgust of herself. At that moment, she thought, to hell with Beverley, to hell with pretending everything was okay, and to hell with obeying her every word. However, then she remembered the threats that were made — against her, against Matt ... and those thoughts just slipped away in a flash. She had to pretend. She had to obey.

Despite feeling suffocated beyond repair by the Supergirl hero costume Beverley instructed her to wear to school, Mia let out a long, shaky breath. She didn't want to go back to school. She didn't want to see her. But she had been completely helpless, and there was nothing she could do but pretend. Mia knew how to fake a smile, but those times were different. How does a person convince a psychotic murderer that they are on their side? How does a person outsmart a person with two personalities?

A part of her couldn't wait to see Matias, but what would be the point of that? She would have to ignore him. Now she wished she never got to know him in the first place. Maybe then she wouldn't feel all these new things for him and it'd be a hell lot easier to walk past him in the school halls.

"Aziz-am! You're going to be late to school!" Arash called from down the stairs, ultimately breaking her out of the staring contest she was having with herself through the mirror.

Mia allowed herself one more glance to examine what she was dealing with. She wasn't a tall girl, but the costume definitely shortened her height a tad. The costume was also a lot brighter than she felt but at least she didn't look as miserable as she truly was. She could give thanks to her Tarte concealer and knife-sharp eyeliner for that. Although, her hair, of course, remained a curly mess, past her shoulders now. The ends were split because she hadn't got it cut in months.

However, something was missing. If she was going to go through all of this trouble, she at least had to walk out of her house shiny as ever. She at least had to go all out. Rummaging through her makeup drawers, she finally stumbled on the perfect lipstick. As red as wine, as smooth as silk, and her trademark lip. She popped the lid off and spun the tube before painting her lips with NARS, and everything just came together after that.

It was funny. It was funny that with everything that was going on, she still cared about her appearance. Did that make her as bad as Beverley? Probably.

Just as Mia had thought that there was a soft knock on the door. Her head flipped, her eyes peering through her open bedroom door. From here, she could only see the rail of the staircase, but she could hear Arash open the door and greet Beverley with a smile. He always did. Mia didn't have to see to know that. At that moment, a number of goosebumps prickled all over her skin. She had felt frozen in terror. She was right here, in her house, talking to her parents.
