Anybody experienced in observing SEO efforts knows that keyword rankings can spaz out and go insane for days or weeks at a time. Great SEO efforts are a long-term plan; they take impact gradually and increment in general trends, not day-to-day rankings. It may seem like a great thing to go from rank 23 to rank 5 in a day, but that kind of instability works both ways. If you're delighted when a jump like that occurs, you're aiming to be crushed when the inverse happens. It's continuously beneficial to take a longer-term view of things.

Part of not feeling terrible almost such ranking fluctuations is knowing why they occur, what causes them, and what you may be able to do around it. So let's see into the issue and see why rankings can go insane.

1. Natural Google Fluctuations

The lower you're in search rankings, the more instability there will be. When you're at number one, you'll fluctuate a few. You might drop to position two or three, and be back up to one in a day or two. It can have a significant affect on traffic, but you're largely stable within the top few results for your keywords.

When you're down within the teens, you're at the top of the bell curve. You've got a part more competition inside a number of points of your position, so minor changes have a much bigger affect. As Google alters components of their algorithm and you alter components of your site – even just publishing new content – you move around. It's completely ordinary and there's nothing you'll truly do about it beyond improving your site normally.

2. Google Algorithm Changes

Google is really changing their algorithm essentially always. A lot of the major upgrades over the final few years, like Panda, are actually ways Google executes machine learning and adaptation in their algorithm.

They make manual changes andalterations nearly day by day, the machine learning is continually makinglittle tuning changes, and bigger updates are pushed each couple of weeks. Moztracks updates, but indeed they are only showing major changes that influencelarge numbers of queries. The minor shifts and changes that happen each daydon't qualify. Again, this can be common, and there's nothing you'll truly doabout it.3. Major Algorithm Updates

Google may be changing their algorithm on a near-daily premise, but they too save up and make bigger changes all at once when essential. We usually give these upgrades names, like Panda, Penguin, Hummingbird, Mobilegeddon, and Fred. With each update comes changes, which SEOs generally call the Google Dance.

Each update is tried in aconstrained environment and, once it's decided to be satisfactory, is pushed tothe live file. Indeed at that point, it's rolled out in waves, since the fileis so gigantic. Major changes take days, sometimes even a week or more, to settleinto a new paradigm. This change causes all sorts of changes to the keywordrankings of different sites, some more than others.4. Sudden Competition

A sudden change in your competition can have a genuine affect on the keyword rankings of everybody around them. Think of it like somebody doing a cannonball in a pool with a handful of other people floating.
