Out of Time [Steve Rogers/Captain America Fan Fiction]

Chapter 1: The Solider Who Cheated Death

-Note: this starts at the end of Captain America and the beginnning of the Avengers where Steve wakes up in the false room....there will be flash back sequences to explain the events that passed over the years while Steve was frozen-

I woke up in S.H.I.E.L.D Headquarters in Brooklyn, New York, I sighed as I rose from the bed and the first thing I looked to was a picture of Steven when we were young, I was in my blue dress and he was in his usual, a brown suit that fit on him alittle to big. I smiled and felt a tear fall from my eye and i quickly wiped it away, after 70 years stuck as a 25 year old i still loved him and I missed him, peggy felt the same as well, but i hadn't talked to her in years, I didn't even know if she was still alive, she just stopped writing me 6 years ago. I looked at the clock and sighed, "shit......." i said as i quickly rushed into the bathroom, i flipped on the radio and i listened as a record clicked into the player and In The Mood by The Andrew Sisters played, I smiled and closed my eyes as I bathed and thought back to when we went to our school dance in 1938.

-Flashback- 

Steve looked at me nervously as we walked together to the couple filled halls of the school, I smiled at him and grabbed his hand,"don't be scared.....i'm with you...." He blushed as I pulled him into the dance hall. "i'm not so sure of this........" he said nervously as he noticed people staring at us, "don't worry about them...just have fun......" i said as i turned to him and placed his hand on my hip and i placed mine on his shoulder. We began to dance slowly and he finally relaxed, "see......nothing to worry about....." i said smiling at him, "but lillian......why....you know i can't dance....." he said as he watched the other people around us. I stopped and looked at him, "thats not the point...... you stay alone all the time.... then you let people hurt you.....i just....for once didn't want you to be alone...." i said a tear slipping from my eye. "i-i'm sorry.......please don't be upset...ya know i hate seeing you cry....." he said while wiping a tear from my cheek, i smiled and kissed him on the cheek, "thank you...." i said smiling.

-Flashback End-

I felt tears falling from my eyes as i finished washing my hair, i walked out of the shower and into my room, i slipped on a black skirt, a black blouse, heels and let my hair stay down instead of putting it in a bun. I walked out of my room and into the control room, "where is nick......" i said as i looked around to find him not there, coulson looked at me and walked over excited, "well....he's bringing some of the items from the wreckage outside of the alps.....". I sighed, "wait...phil.....why are you so excited.....its just an old plane wreck site....", he looked at me and smiled, "Well i had the pleasure of meeting you.... Evening Lily..... now I get to meet Captain America! I really want him to sign my card collection.....you have seen it haven't you....", i looked at him in shock, "no...wait..i mean...yes....'ive seen your cards but what did you say....", "Captain America.....they found him in the wreakage......it seems he is asleep......he hasn't aged any!". I stood there my heart skipping, "Steven is alive....." i said to myself, "why is that surprising......he is after all the super solider.....weren't you made from the same serum...." phil asked as went to call fury, "yes....peggy suggested i do it.....since i had the close bond with steve.....and i wanted to continue helping....america..remember i joined the navy not long after steve's...well..when he went missing...". 

I stopped in the hall as fury walked past me, "nick....i mean.... director fury...sir.....is it true....did you find him....." i said as he turned to me, he smiled, "yes....and he is still alive.....he is in the healing room.....we had to make a room that matched the year he...went missing... we have to tell him gradually the changes that have happened....i'm not sure his mind can take it....." , "may i see him...." he smiled, "you can....he is still frozen though......the men in the lab are figuring out a way to quicken the process delicately". I nodded and rushed down to the healing area outside the lab and saw steves name above the room he was in, i took a breath and slowly walked in, i looked over to see steve encased in ice and holding his shield. I placed a hand over my mouth and began to cry, I sat at the foot of the bed and saw one of his hands laying to his side and i held it the warmth of my skin gradually warmed his, I felt his fingers move and inertwine in with mine and i smiled.

I sat there for hours, days and each day i kept his hand firmly grasped in my own until he was completely thawed out. "ok...we need to get him out of these clothes and into something more familiar to him...." i heard fury say as he walked into the room, i looked at him and he smiled slightly, "you have to leave the room......i know you stayed with him this long and i know your past....but you can't be here when he wakes up". I looked to fury then to steve, as much as i hated to admit it fury was right, i rose from the bed and walked out and headed to my room. I pulled out a white blouse, black skirt and black heels and hit my radio as i passed it to shower, the record slipped onto the player and i heard the needle as it touch the vinyl. 'Settle Down' by Kimbra played, I smiled and began to bathe but stopped when a loud crash came from the other room, the vinyl began to skip and i ran out of the shower my hair wet and a towel around me, i quickly slipped the clothes on and ran out. "what was that!" i yelled, i saw people running out of someones way and i looked and saw steve running out of the building. 

I quickly ran after him and paniced as he went into the street, "shit...steve stop!" i yelled as he kept running, he didn't hear me, i threw off my heels and ran after him. I eventually caught up and he had stopped and looked around him his hands on his head, "you alright there cap.....i'm sorry...but we had to put you in that room for a reason..." he said, steve turned to him and yelled, "and for what...where am i!", "you've been asleep for seventy years......we didn't want you to find out so quickly....but-" he stopped as he saw me in the crowd behind steve. He crossed his arms, "lillian....i told you to not be here when he woke up.....are you deaf....", steve turned and looked at me, my heart began to pound as he approached me, "how....lillian....why are you here...shouldn't you be...." he said confused. "its a very long story......." i said out of breath, "well then you can explain it to him....and you can make him familiar with the changes that have happened since he was asleep....." nick said as we were escorted back to the headquarters.
