Chapter 14

"Stay hidden" was the last thing Chief said to us before leaving the small room. I look to my right to see Niall cuddled into me, trying to get impossibly closer. We were both scared. Scared of not knowing if he will find us. Scared of not knowing what to do in this time. Everything happened so fast.

Flashback to twenty-three minutes ago-

Niall and I are now sitting in front of the small fireplace that the Chief started for us. He gave us some hot cocoa a few minutes ago, so right now we are just having a silent and cozy time. Niall is pressed against my side, staring into the fire. "Whatcha thinking about?" I ask him to get his attention. Neither of us are tired anymore, having slept in the car ride to this cabin. "Nothing really." He replies to me without moving his focused eyes from the flames dancing in the pit. A couple minutes go by, me getting lost in thought as well until Niall starts talking again. He starts with a sigh, "Do you think they're worrying about us? Our families I mean. The police, they kind of just took us without any warning. Do you think they even know what's going on?" I see the worry and sadness in Niall's eyes as he speaks to me and I hate it. I hate seeing him get stressed and anxious.

"I don't know Niall. I wish I could tell you something positive, but I just don't know what is going on and what will happen." I can see the little bit of hope wash away from his eyes. It kills me. I don't know why I feel like this is my fault because I know it isn't. I feel this anger suddenly appear. Anger for the Chief for taking us away from our families when we just got back to them. And anger for Blair, the man who ruined our lives, but also saved Niall. Him and I probably wouldn't have made it alive through the storm the night Blair found us. He took us in and cleaned Niall's wound. But I don't think it was for good intentions.

"Did you want to tell me your dream Niall? You can tell me when you are ready." When Niall told me that he might have remembered a bit of his life, I was excited for him. Before he could tell me a little of it, the Chief came back from scoping the safe house and told us to follow him. This is where we are now, in front of the fireplace with hot cocoa in our bellies. "Yeah, I guess I can tell you. I have to remember more of it though. It's a little vague and blurry." He takes a breath and continues, "I was walking in a hallway. There were a few people throughout my walk. They told me where to go and I followed. Then, I walked out onto a stage. I look around and there are hundreds of people out in front of me, staring. Some were clapping and smiling while I walked out. I felt happy but also nervous." He stops talking. I look up at him and he looks over to me. "Yeah, that's all I remember actually." He gives me a sheepish smile. I return a gentle one and reassure him.

"That's okay. It's good you are starting to remember some things. I believe that memory was when you first auditioned on the x factor. You were standing on stage in front of many people and judges. This is so good Niall! I'm so proud of you."

"Thanks Harry." I give him a look of confusion. Why is he thinking me? "For being here for me. Without you, I probably would be on my fourth break down and panic attack. You help calm me and make me feel safe, so thank you Haz." I hug him tight, letting him know that I appreciate what he said.

"How are you both holding up? I brought you guys some soup, made it myself and hope you like it." Chief Brons comes in with two steaming bowls. He hands them to us along with a spoon for each. He left to go back to the small kitchen when there was a sound just above silent. It wasn't one that sounds like a spoon dropping, it was one coming outside the safe place. Niall and I look at each other. We try listening for it again, but all we hear is Brons singing a song, humming the words he doesn't quite know.

"It was probably just the wind." I told Niall. It's pretty windy out right now, so it isn't a crazy possibility. "The trees maybe" I say when we hear it for the second time. After the third sound, this one louder than the last two, I called for Chief Brons. "Chief! Hey Chief!" I try not to yell too loud, incase whomever is out there hears me. They probably heard anyway, but I'm just too scared to get up from holding Niall. The Chief walks back in, in the process of asking what I need when the wood boards outside the porch creaks. It creaks too much and too loud for it to only be the wind. We look from the door to the chief, silently asking what to do. He mouths to us to slowly get up and walk to him. We do as told, as quickly and quietly as we can, me holding Niall's hand to make sure he is with me at all times.

"Okay, there is a small escape room in the house. I will show you how to get to the first room and where to go from there. I can't go with you because I need to make sure whomever is out there stays away from you two. Niall, I can't lose you boy again. You are like my grandson, I was there when you were born and went to each of your birthday parties. You're family to me and I will do everything I can to stop this danger for the both of you." He finishes and takes a breath. "Now, come and follow me. We must be quick!"

We follow him to a smaller room in the back. He opens the door and ushers us to go inside. He doesn't turn on the light, but we could see a little from the moonlight in the very small window. The window is to small for a person to fit through. Maybe it would fit a small baby, but that is about it. "Okay, there is a small door straight ahead of you. You have to crawl to get through it. Once you go through, lock the door and DO NOT come out for any reason unless I tell you to. Is that clear?" We both nod. "Stay hidden" and the Chief is gone.

I stay standing there, in shock. "Harry, I'm scared." Niall says to me, tugging on my arm.

"Okay." I take in a deep breath. "Let's go." Niall nods and we both walk straight towards the wall, trying to look for the small door. It was quiet as we feel around for it when a big sound comes outside the room. It was the front door. If this is a safe house, why was there not heavy locks on the doors? That seems a bit foolish on their part. "Their" as in the people who built this as a safe house.

"Found it Harry!" Niall whisper-yells to me. I run over to him and he opens the door. It opens into the room. I tell him to go in first and then crawl in after him. Once we are both inside, I close it and use the locks. We huddle together at the far end of the small room. Scared, terrified is all we feel at this moment. Praying and hoping that Brons saves us.
