Chapter Three

I made my way to my final period practically dragging my feet through the hallway. Lana and Anjali were talking about their movie plans that they had tomorrow so I zoned out of the conversation. They had chemistry while I had biology so I told them goodbye when I walked into my class. I took my seat, and took out my books. In this period, no one sat next to me so that meant I had no lab partner. That suited me just fine. I preferred sitting by myself anyway. That way I had no one to distract me. I sat waiting for Mr Reynolds to start. I played with my pen as I often did while I was bored.

“Rightio guys! Listen up!” Mr Reynolds said from the front of the class. The class immediately quietened up.

“We have a new student today who has transferred in from another subject,” he continued. I groaned internally knowing that the only empty seat in the whole lab was next to me. There was a knock at the door and then entered a tall copper haired boy who I had never seen before. He had eyes the colour of the sky. His skin tone was tanned but not overly. He was muscular. He was what you would describe a ‘hunk’.  All the girls in the class apart from me sighed hopelessly. I just stared at them with disgust. Hormonal freaks. The guy standing by the door smiled a crooked smile and I swear some girl at the back of the class fainted or something.

“Hey! It’s Nate!” Jake, the captain of the football team hollered from his seat. He grinned and waved to him. ‘Nate’ waved back and said hey back.  Apprantly he was popular or something and that confused me because I had never even seen the guy before. Great.  Stuck up asshole coming my way!

“Class, Nathanial Fitzgerald is our new addition,” Mr Reynolds said with a smile.

“Nathanial, your seat is right there,” Mr Reynolds said, pointing to the empty seat beside me. Nate smiled at me and I blinked back. He made a confused expression and strode towards to the seat.  I looked around the class to see that nearly every girl was giving me death stares. Typical. I just rolled my eyes at them. Mr Reynolds then began the lesson. I took notes as usual listening very carefully to what he was saying.

“Hi,” I heard the new voice beside me whisper. ‘The distraction begins’ I thought in my head. I gave him a quick glare and shushed him.  He clicked his tongue but said nothing more.

“So, I’m going to pass around different samples, and I want you and your lab partner to label what phase it is, okay?” Mr Reynolds commanded. The silence in the class had broken once all the students in the class were getting the equipment for the practical. I sighed, and got out of my seat, luckily all the equipment was right next to my bench so I retrieved it all pretty quickly. I turned to see about five girls talking to my new lab partner, all of them smiling like Cheshire cats. I scoffed at the sight.

“Lucky you eh?” Bradley said next to me. He was a good classmate and always managed to make me smile.

“How so?” I asked.

Bradley smirked.

“Getting to sit with that Nate guy, the guy who all the girls die over,”

“Brad, I have never even seen him before today,”

“Uh-huh. Sure.”

“Honest!”

“Whatever you say, anyway, I’ll catch you later, got go do this stupid thing,”

“Yeah, see you,”

He winked at me before walking back to his bench. I walked back to my bench, my hands full of the equipment. The girls that were there weren’t anymore.

“Thanks for the help,” I muttered sarcastically to Nate.

“Oh crap! Sorry,” he responded apologetically. I ignored him, setting out the apparatus. I could feel his eyes on me while I was doing it.
