Chapter Four

“Ella, honey, wake up,” I heard my mother’s voice say. I could feel her stroking my hair; it was nice, soothing. Slowly I urged my eyes open, regretting it as they hurt due to the light. I moved my head to my right, to see my mother. Her long brown, chocolate coloured hair tied in a neat bun. She was still wearing her work suit; her face was as immaculate as ever. She smiled down at me, immediately I smiled back.

“Hi,” I said, while yawning. I looked around to see that I was in my bed and my room. Some of my hair was in my eyes, so I moved my right hand to stroke it out only to see a IV tube. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

“It’s a glucose drip, honey,” my mother said while smiling. My mother’s smile was the most reassuring thing in the whole world. The glucose drip was not surprising as my mother was a doctor so she could pull a few strings to get access to this sort of stuff at home. I smiled back at her.

“What’s the time?” I asked, she looked at her wrist.

“Nine thirty five,”

“Whoa,” I had so much homework to do as well. I groaned internally.

“I know,” my mother said while giggling.

“You hungry?” she asked and as if on cue my stomach growled loudly, I felt my cheeks turn crimson. My mother laughed as she got her cell phone out of her pocket.

“Dem?...hmm…yes…urm…yeah go on then…it’s in the oven…be careful, wear gloves…just a glass will be fine…okay…okay,” my mother said on the phone.

“The whole clan’s coming,” she said grinning.

“Great,” I muttered sarcastically.

“Hey, enough of that,” she said sternly though I could see the glint of amusement in her sapphire blue eyes. I grinned at her.

“You really scared Drake today,” she said.

“Oh?”

“Yeah, you’d think being a med student he would’ve known what to do,” she said shaking her head. Drake was currently on his third year at medical school, the school was close to home so that’s why he was still at home.

“He threw water on me didn’t he?” I asked, recalling the earlier conversation I had. It was fuzzy but I think Nate had been there too.  My mother nodded, just as she was about to say something my door opened and in came my father, my four brothers and Cassidy. I knew that Cassidy would be here, my mother probably called her over; she lived down the street from me so it was not a problem for her to be here.  The sight was calming, as much as I complained about my family; I loved them so much more. I knew that they’d give everything up for me in a heartbeat. My father sat beside my mother on the bed while George, my eldest brother and Drake, my second eldest brother, sat on the sofa. Josh, the third eldest, sat on my desk chair. Demetri sat on my love cushion and Cassidy sat on my beanbag. You’d think that with all of them in my room, it’d be crowded, but no, it was still looked really big.

“How’re you feeling?” my father asked.

“Good, just was a little tired,” I said sheepishly.

“I’ll say,” Drake muttered, causing my other brothers to snigger. I rolled my eyes.

“Mom said that you were scared for me?” I teased. I saw his cheeks tint red.

“No, no I wasn’t…I was just…shut up,” he said. I laughed loudly at his frustrated face. My stomach growled loudly again.  I blushed.

“Oh, damn, I left the tray downstairs!” Demetri said.
