"Ivie? Ivie are you okay?" Ivie blinks, she had been staring at her.
Mrs Walker's voice came booming back and people shuffling their papers, writing. All their unfamiliar faces returned to normal.
"Yeah, I'm okay" Ivie says going back to work, ignoring the fact that this girl could answer some questions. Esther only stares at her, watching how she wrote.
Sometimes Ivie, you've got to express what's on your mind...
so that the black mist becomes clear
"What did you say?" she says looking at Esther shocked.
"Hmm? I didn't say anything, are you sure your okay Ivie?" Thinking it must've been her imagination she convinced herself shes hearing things.
"I'm okay just tried" they continue to do their work.
**********
Time went by and soon it was lunch. Esther sat at a table near the door after she got her food. The cafeteria wasn't that big because this area was small only about 30 tables and chairs were in there. About half of the students were here, all doing there own thing. Ivie didn't get her food, she already had some in her bag, plus the food looked unhealthy. Esther had gotten an apple and water from her bag.
"What? You on a diet or something?" Ivie says sitting down opposite her smiling a little.
"Oh no, I'm not allowed to eat anything here. I don't know what's inside it and if i did i can die due to what they put inside it. I can't eat much otherwise i'd get really sick then eventually be deceased" Esther says smiling.
Ivie stares at her speechless. "Oh my god I'm so sorry Esther" she says holding her hand.
"Nah I'm just kidding don't worry about it" she says patting Ivie's hand.
"Yahh! I actually believed you!" she says pulling back her hand.
"Awww! But i couldn't help it! I'm sorryyy Ivie, your just so gullible!" she says biting into her apple.
"Hmph." was all Ivie said.
"So do you have any siblings Ivie?" Esther says with a mouth full of apple.
"Aish, don't talk with your mouth full." she says bringing out her lunch.
"I'm an only child. The only person I live with is my cousin. He doesn't have any parents, I don't either. Our uncle died a month ago and I received a letter saying I inherited this house we just moved here about 5 days ago. It isn't that bad though, kinda cool actually." Ivie says opening her container that held her fried rice and chicken.
She eats quietly while Esther stared at her speechless. Ivie looks up at her.
"What's wrong? You okay?" Ivie says after swallowing her food.
"Yeah...Ivie..." "Don't worry about that. How about you? Do you have any siblings?" Ivie says eating a spoonful of rice.
"Oh!" Esther's face lights up. "I have an older brother! He's cool but sometimes he's a bit of an egg" she whispers the last part and laughs.
"What'd you say bout me shortie?" a boy with dark roots and orange hair pinches Esther's shoulder.
"Ouch i said nothing! Nothing! Lemme go already." she says poking his side. Laughing he sits beside her.
"Hi, I'm Eugene. Esther's older brother." he says holding out his hand noticing her.
"Hello, I'm Ivie. Nice to met ya Eugene" she says shaking his hand with a soft smile.
The people in the cafeteria didn't change like the people in her class room, instead they hid in the shadows, far back from the students. There was no sense of being watched, in fact she felt safe. Ivie ate her food while her new friends mocked each other.
(rustle) A boy with grey eyes and dark brown hair sits beside Ivie with no emotion.
"Ah that's my friend and right hand man!" he says getting up. "Jayce ma mann how's it going buddie?"
"Piss off" he says flatly
"Aww i love you too buddie!! That's way we're best friends!" Eugene grabs his shoulder for a hug.
"Dude! What the hell!?" Jayce starts pushing him away while Eugene still clings on.
People start to look and whisper but besides that it made Esther and Ivie laugh. The girls continued to eat while the boys kept play fighting each other. For the first time in a very long time, Ivie was happy.
***************
After lunch Ivie had History, a class neither of her friends were in but Jayce. This class was full of books on racky old shelf's, posters of former homes and factories, earlier discoveries from way back to the 1800s and pictures of students that used to go there. Class photos in black and white, the much older ones were wearing white clothes. The recent ones were in a school uniform. White button tops, grey skirts and shorts. That one was a year, no two years ago. It was the beginning of the second week of school, class photos were already done so Ivie wasn't worried.
This teacher was an old man around in his 50's. Mr Charles was round and had short legs, small glasses at the end of his big red nose and used a cane to help him move. He acknowledge Ivie as the new student and gave out an assignment on their hometown.
Ivie sat next to a girl who was very quiet and did her work silently. Everyone in the room was silent, only pens and pencils could be heard and the clock ticking. It was unusual because the classes were always filled with chatter. She looked around and saw Jayce siting beside the guy she saw this morning. Both were facing away from each other, but both were looking at Ivie. She suddenly felt uneasy and turned back around, looking down at her paper. Someone stood up and handed their paper in then sat back down.
*It's so tense in here*
Ivie looked around and saw that the students around Jayce and that guy were facing away from them, they had also moved their tables apart. An uncomfortable vibe came from them two, a vibe Ivie knew very well. Those boys were not human.
