She didn't find any of what happened funny, she hated hospitals and anything that has to do with the surroundings of the hospitals. Her darkest memories are all related to hospitals, medicines and doctors with boring faces when they come to deliver the bad news to you, that the important person in your life is no more.
Sighing to herself, she let herself seated in the plum chair the nurse offered her setting her bag on the side and folding her arms to herself.
"Don't you want to be by your husband's side inside the doctor's office?"
The nurse questioned glancing in her direction.
"Uhmm he's not my husband... i mean we're not a couple "."Oh i see."
The nurse muttered awkwardly and Amal just managed a crooked smile in return.
"I think you're in good shape Bassam, considering how you almost passed out a couple of weeks ago". The doctor spoke while scribbling some notes on his clipboard.
"Yeah Doctor Maurice, i take my medication and i take all necessary precautions. And oh, my inhaler is always with me".
Both men laughed heartily and the Bassam got on his feet hoping to leave.
"I will see you in a fortnight doc".
They shook hands and Bassam headed for the door. His heart jilted in his chest upon seeing her. Graciously sitting with her gaze focused on the magazine in her hand. Her face was set and a more serious look fitted her features he decided. A small part of him felt happy when the nurse had an impression that they were a couple which suprised him considering his view about love and marriage ever since he got burnt, twice.
Jamming his hands in the pocket of his jeans, he cleared his throat in an attempt to catch her attention. Her head shot up and looked in his direction and her face immidiately warmed into a small smile."You got something to keep you a little busy i see".
"Yeah i helped myself with them when the nurse offered them before she left".
She snapped the magazine close and gathered her bag."How was the doctor's appointment? ".
She asked. She was avoiding his gaze,he noticed and has been unusually quiet.
"Uhm it was okay. I am in good shape and i am to keep off medication for now until the next appointment ".
She only nodded in response fiddling with the strap of her bag.
Bassam pulled up in front of her home and she mentally jubiliated for coming back home. She was tired and her mind has been racing with thoughts alot. They were not surely a couple, not even close to that but why doesn't her mind stop thinking towards that direction? With the speed she's going she might hurt hersef again for the second time and get her already shattered heart broken again.
Irritated with herself, she muttered her thanks and stepped out of the car. She heard him fall in step beside her and felt more irritated, not by him but by the whole situation threatening to jumble her mind."Amal, thank you ".
"For what? " she asked in return feigning ingnorance.
"For being with me at the hospital "
She brushed him off with a wave of her hand.
"Will i be able to see you tomorrow? Maybe after your morning classes? "
She wanted to see him too, but for her own sake she decided against it. No she didn't want any emotional attachment with anybody, not now not ever. That's a dangerous territory she doesn't want to get it.
"I uh i don't think i will be free. I have got alot on my plate and i need to make up for some tutorials that i missed", the white lie tasted quite sour on her tongue.
He nodded with a small smile in understanding.
"How about i call you then?".
"Bassam please, all of this is happening so fast, don't you think? We both need to slow down". She immidiately regretted her words seeing the expression of hurt on his face which was quickly replaced by a smile.
"Is it a bad thing for me to call and hear from you Amal?" He challenged.
Her mouth felt dry and she couldn't find words to reply him.
"I thought we have something going on, and i ...."
"We have nothing going on please. Don't confuse things more. I have to go, thanks for bringing me home which you didn't have to".
She briskly walked away annoyed at herself and angry at how things are unfolding. She lied to herself and lied to Bassam who was nothing but nice to her.
"What if he doesn't feel the same way about you as you feel about him?". A part of her thought.
"Atleast it's better than him feeling the same way as you feel about him, that would make things difficult and more complicated" . Another part of her responded.
