Scott was whistling to himself as he folded two pairs of pajamas for his sister. He knew he was only staying at Avi’s for one night, but Norah was not a neat child. She would manage to dirty both of the pajama sets before the night was over which is why Scott already put a onesie in the overnight bag.

“Bubby! Bubby, look! I drew you a picture today!” Scott turns around when he hears Norah’s excited voice. Having watched her grow up Scott could understand her half English perfectly and corrected it in his own head as it happened.

Scott crouches down to her level so that he can look at the picture. It’s a stick figure with two blue scribbles for eyes and a blob of yellow of hair. Scott loves it. “Wow! This is incredible, Norah. You’re my little artist, aren’t you?”

Norah nods her head happily, blonde hair getting in her face. “Yay!”

“Now, do you have everything you’ll need for tonight? We don’t want to take from all the fun to make a trip back here, bear.” Scott smiles as he says the nickname. It was one only Scott called her because she would only watch movies with bears in them. Norah was oddly obsessed with the animal, but Scott always indulges her. No matter how many times she asks to see a bear movie.

Norah runs off instead of answering her older brother which just leaves Scott to stand back up and chuckle to himself. He finishes packing Norah’s bag just to walk to his own room and start the process all over again but for himself. Scott is adding a hoodie to the bag when Norah runs into his room with a large grin and a large stuffed bear dragging behind her.

“I see Barry is joining us this evening. It’s a pleasure to see you again, old friend.” Scott says with a small bow. Norah decided that Barry was a prince of the bear kingdom, so Scott always bowed whenever he sees the stuffed animal.

Norah giggles and shifts happily from foot to foot as she waits for Scott. Scott adds a few more things to his bag before slinging it over one shoulder. “Alright, bear, let’s go do this thing!”

“Hotwing! You made it.” Avi grins and pulls Scott in for a hug. “You go ahead and get inside. I have a surprise waiting for you in there. I can take this kiddo off your hands.”

“Alright, thanks, Av.” Scott smiles, kissing Norah on the head before going inside Avi’s house. His dad worked nights while his mom usually got off of work at eight or nine at night, so Scott knew neither of them would be home at the moment. Though, he was more focused on whatever surprise Avi could have in store for him.

Scott takes his shoes off by the door before setting them on the shoe rack that only Scott and Avi’s mom seemed to use. As he wanders into the living room Scott starts to wonder more about the surprise. Maybe Avi’s sister, Esther, was in town again. She had moved out for college a year ago and Scott really did miss having her around. She was like an older sister to him. When Scott reaches the living room and sees Kirstie standing there with a large grin, all thoughts of Esther leave his mind.

This was so much better. No offense, Esther.

“Kit? What are you doing here?” Scott immediately smiles and sets his bag down somewhere in the living room. “If I had known you were going to be here I would have dressed cuter.”

Kirstie rolls her eyes with a quiet giggle. “You always look cute, Scottie.”

“That’s debatable, but I would have at least shaved.”

“But I like your tiny man beard too.”

“My ‘tiny man’ beard?” Scott asks with a raised eyebrow and a chuckle. “Wow. Okay, I see how you really feel about me now.”

Kirstie smiles, closing the distance between them and wrapping her arms around Scott’s waist. It is always a little awkward due to the height difference of about a foot, but it was something the couple had learned to love at this point. Scott engulfed her in his arms, smiling and breathing deeply once they’re holding each other.

“I’m sorry for not telling you about this, Scottie. Avi really wanted to surprise you and I thought it would be cute.”

“This is the best surprise ever,” Scott says softly. “I love you, Kirstie.”

They had both said I ‘I love you’ six months into their relationship and neither of them had ever regretted it. Except for Scott, who regretted not saying it any sooner. He really felt like he had already won the lottery when it came to his love life. Some people never got that feeling and Scott had gotten it at seventeen. Now he just had to hold onto her.

Kirstie smiles, being held by the only arms she would show weakness in. “I love you too, Scottie. So much.”
