Raven was having a meltdown. She tried her best to stay calm, practicing coping tactics she learnt such as breathing in and out deeply, counting backwards from 50, but to no avail she couldn't compose herself. Mendel seemed to notice, for he asked her if she was feeling alright.
"I'm fine," Raven replied awkwardly. She was mortified and wanted to run back the way they came, but by this time they were too far inside to know where the exit was. They seemed to be walking for what seemed like hours among endless hallways inside the diamond. They took numerous twists and turns; Raven wondered how he remembered which way to go and silently praised his sense of direction. What made it more uncomfortable was the lingering silence between them. Raven didn't want to embarrass herself further, so she kept her mouth shut, concentrating on the clicking of their feet against the dazzling ground, slowly following the trail of Mendel's flowing black robes. Eventually, they entered a grand hall, quite similar to the area where she departed from her brother and Avor, except much smaller. 'The Main Chambers' as Mendel called it. When she entered, she was faced with several more men, each of them at least older than sixty. They all had prominent, flowing white hair like Mendel and quite eerily resembled each other, but that might just be an old people thing Raven presumed.
"Ms. Cadwell, may I present to you the elder council- official rulers and peacekeeper of the Republic of Avalon." Mendel exclaimed in a booming voice. Raven got over her initial fears of the men and bowed;
"It is an honor to meet all of you," she said politely, "I was wondering-"
"Ms. Cadwell, you are not to speak unless allowed to, understood?" Mendel said threateningly.
"But-" she was cut off again,
"I am aware that your world and ours have different policies on showing respect, but once in the Republic, you must follow our lifestyle."
Raven sighed in defeat, "I understand," she replied quite solemnly.
The council then proceeded to inform her of her visit to Avalon.
"We have brought you here for an important task," one of the councilmen dressed in emerald green robes boomed. "A recent threat has been arising in our world- the return of one of the most dangerous villains out is doomed to occur at any moment. Word is out that she is to break free of her prison shortly which must not happen if we are to keep the balance of this world in order." He paused, "any questions so far, Ms. Cadwell?"
Raven blinked, she understood the issue so far except for one problem,
"yes, what kind of role do I play in this scenario?" She felt as if the council members did not like the tone of her question for one of them made a grunt of disapproval. It made her anxious, but whatever they were talking about seemed dangerous for a normal teenager to accomplish so she continued with her point. "I am not connected to your world in any way, and I'm just a normal teenager; why me out of everyone here?" she concluded. The council members thought over it for a while and a different one, dressed in all scarlet replied, "according to the Spirit Guardian of our world, you are the chosen one to protect us."
A councilman in amethyst robes continued, "true, we are just as puzzled as you as to why the Great Guardian would have chosen an...earthling to go on such tedious missions to protect a world which is not yours," she said in abhorrence, "but unfortunately we have learnt to not question the Guardian's choices as they are never wrong."
Raven was feeling a variety of emotions, most not quite good. First off, she was rather insulted how the councilman in amethyst addressed her as an earthling with a tone of disgust. Second, she was plain confused as to who- or what this 'Great Guardian' was and why their decisions are revered in this place. Third, she was slightly frightened at the thought of some sort of super villain running lose. The events currently unfolding seemed way too much like a TV series. A part of her wanted to believe that she was just dreaming this all out, that none of this other dimensional business was actually real, but she knew despite how absurd it all appeared, this was very much real.
