CHAPTER NINE

Fortunately, the case was enough to get my mind working again. Though, as I expected, it wasn't as difficult as Jiro told me about. The thought made me roll my eyes, because I knew that he did this on purpose-- he gave me a case that was bound to get you thinking, but once you crack the code and find a hint, everything else comes to you.

Now, it's been about a month since I resigned as a barista, and went back to working as a lawyer. It's also been a month since I last saw and encountered Jungkook. He does message me from time to time, asking me if I was okay, and occasionally, if I found the time to do so, I would reply.

I tied my hair into a ponytail, eating a piece of bread as I did do. I was currently heading to the office to submit my final report on a case Jiro has last given me. Though it's nice to take your time when solving cases so you could work well in the court, I always found it easy to work under pressure. I always wanted things to be done as soon as possible.

I grabbed my keys on the counter and took my time to exit my apartment. I turned on my motorcycle, and put on my helmet, but before I managed to go, my phone rang.

I sighed and pulled it out of my pocket:

It was Rin. I took off my helmet and answered it, "Hello?"

"Reyna!" I could imagine him beaming just because I answered his phone call, "I called to remind you about--"

"The town dance," we said in unison. He laughed on the fact that we said it simultaneously, and I couldn't help but smile on how enthusiastic he was. "Yes, I know. I'll just be submitting the report to Jiro at the office, and I'll go as soon as I can."

"We'll go," he corrected. And despite him not being here with me, I nodded.

Every year, our hometown holds a town dance-- the butterly dance. It's a small festival that is said to strengthen the bonds of friendships and relationships. And every year, for as long as I can remember, Rin and I would always go together. Years ago, I remember clearly, on the exact same day, he confessed to me. I'm just glad he's as understanding as he could be.

"Yeah, alright. I'll get going now," I say, and he hummed, saying goodbye, before hanging up. I then made my way to the office.

I pulled out a cigar from my pocket and lit it, before walking inside the office's lobby. Right away, I see Jiro sitting on one of the seats, and a very familiar face seated in front of him. They didn't seem to notice me, and I took the opportunity to place the folder on the small coffee table in front of them.

"Already?" Jiro exclaimed and clapped his hands excitedly. He stood up and wrapped his arms around me, patting my back. "You never fail to impress me, Reyna."

"Of course," the man in the brown vintage suit scoffed. "The smell of smoke,  walking high with her pride, the academy's highest ranking student, and Jiro's favourite. Where have you been, Reyna Elle Dare?"

"It's been years since I worked here," you see, this man had always been my rival. One of his clearest and biggest goals was to surpass me-- "Have you reached your goal?"

"Oi, I don't have favourites." Jiro defended, "I kind of missed you two arguing. If you want, you can go on. I can listen all day." I rolled my eyes, since Jiro had always said the exact same thing whenever me and Knov Laurent argued.

The relationship me and Knov had was odd. People often thought that we argued and argued, but had each other's backs as colleagues. And though I did respect him for being a skillful lawyer and detective, I doubt that he doesn't have anything against me.
