Chapter 10

The next day came quickly. As the sun rose over Oz the pair of travellers had no idea how much panic they had caused in the Emerald City that morning. They moved quickly and retrieved the Grimmerie from under the floorboards where they had hid it last night. They left behind their resting place and began to walk around in search of somewhere to stay. Their very few belongings didn't slow them down much, but the pregnant witch held them back slightly. She tried to walk quickly but after a while the weight of the baby began to hurt her legs and back.

"Do you need to stop?" Fiyero asked.

She took a deep breath and closed her eyes for a moment.

"I'll be alright." She reassured him and powered on.

The scarecrow couldn't help but worry as Elphaba walked. They weren't sure where they were going, they never were when they traveled. Some days they would travel for nights on end before finding somewhere where they could stay for a while. However this was before Elphaba was with child and could walk for hours on end. Now she hobbled along, looking exhausted.

"Please Elphaba, we should stop and sit down. Nobody's around, it will be fine."

"We are in the woods, somebody could appear at any moment. I'm not willing to risk that for a few seconds of sitting down."

"You are pushing yourself too far. For the baby's sake just sit down for a moment."

Even with her strong will this was an argument Elphaba wouldn't be winning. Reluctantly, she lowered herself down onto the ground and leaned against a tree. Fiyero sat down beside her and left their belongings on the ground next to him.

"You need to learn to relax a little." He said softly and placed his hand on top of hers.

"It's not in my blood to relax. I've always been the same." She sighed and looked up at the little bit of sunlight that broke through the trees.

"But you're a mother now, it's time you slowed down."

"This child will speed us up if anything. Having to teach her how we don't live like other people and what she can and can't down."

"What makes you think it's a girl?" Fiyero grinned at her.

She shrugged her shoulders and smiled slightly. It was the most she had smiled in a while.

"I just have a feeling."

The pair stayed by the tree for a while and talked about the future with their child. They both knew what they wanted and they wouldn't find it in Oz. They decided to leave Oz for good once the child was born. Start a new life where no one knew their faces or their past. A place where they could raise their child happily and safely. It sounded like some sort of dream but there would surely be a place like that somewhere.

After their long chat Elphaba had fallen asleep. The stress had finally caught up to her but Fiyero was glad to see her resting. He stroked her hair softly while her head rested limply on his shoulder.

"My Elphie." He whispered and kissed her head softly.

In that moment everything seemed perfect. The breeze was cool and the sun was warm. Their future was planned and nothing could stop them now. However, perfect moments like this never lasted long. A rustle of branches came from close by causing Elphaba to wake up.

"Somebody's coming, we have to go!" She whispered.

Using all her strength she tried to stand up but the weight of her swollen belly held her down.

"Who's there?" A voice echoed through the trees.

Fiyero pulled her onto her feet and grabbed their belongings and they began to make a quick get away.

"In the name of Glinda the Good, show yourself." A voice boomed from behind them.

With Elphaba incapable of running the two could not get away fast enough and the stranger caught up to them.
