CHAPTER 5
When they reached Mastermind’s hut in the Rainforest, Starnami had Fateflight knock, because she looked like him. On the way there, he had told her all his personality traits that he used with his dad. Now, she did an exquisite impression of Starflight (it helped to look and talk exactly like him). The door opened at the first knock.
Mastermind’s assistant, Crescent, poked his small head out the door and said in his high, squeaky voice, “go away! Mast- Oh, it’s you! Hi Starflight! Hold on while I inform your dad that it’s you.” He popped back in and closed the door behind him. A few seconds later, Mastermind himself walked out and hugged Fateflight. Great, Fateflight thought, now he’s hugging me. Oops! I need to think like Starflight so if he reads me, he still thinks it’s his son!
“Hi, uh, dad,” Fateflight stuttered.
“Hi! Oh, your friends are here!” Mastermind released Fateflight. She breathed heavily, he squeezed hard!
“Hello Sunny, Fatespeaker, Clay, Tsunami, and- Where’s G’mory?” Mastermind shook talons with each one as he said their names. But of course, these weren’t their real names.
“It’s Glory dad. Not G’mory,” Fateflight corrected.
“Oh, but, where is she?” Mastermind questioned.
“Queen’s duties,” Fateflight responded, “Ok, we have a serious problem.”
“What is it?” Mastermind asked eagerly, he loved problems. Problems meant using your brains to fix them, and Mastermind loved using his brain.
“Well, I’m not your son,” Fateflight broke it to him the wrong way.
“What do you mean? I am your father. You are my son. How could that be different?”
“I am your son,” Starnami stepped forward.
“What?” Mastermind was puzzled, “then who’s this?” He pointed to Fateflight.
“I,” Fateflight declared, “am Fatefli- I mean, Fatespeaker.”
“Fatespeaker?” Mastermind then asked, “and everyone else?”
“Tsunami,” said Tsunanny.
“Clay,” Clayspeaker stated.
“Glory,” Glorclay told him.
“And, as you know, Starflight,” said Starnami.
“How?” questioned Mastermind simply.
“Well, we found a gem inside a cage on a pedestal made of vines. We cou-” Tsunanny started.
“A gem? Inside a cage made of vines? You’re kidding me right?” Mastermind interrupted.
“No, why?” Clayspeaker answered.
“Because, you may have found the switching sapphire.”
